This article in Computer World looks at how much better off Mac users are than PC users when it comes to handling viruses. It basically comes to the conclusion that since OS X is based on Unix and since Unix has been targeted in the past, there is a chance that the Mac OS can be attacked as well. Google is by far the king of the hill, with an estimated 77% of the field, including AOL and Yahoo!. However, Yahoo! has announced that it is going to use its own search engine instead and other new comers are appearing on the horizon. One that looks particularly interesting is Teoma. It not only provides a list of links, but it provides a list of links based on an expert's panel of what is best and also a list of refine links to help. Give it a try, I think you will be impressed. After all, you really don't need the most returns, you need the one or two that actually give you want you were searching for.
(BTW in searching for my name: "Lynn Wegley" with the quotes, Google found 49 occurrences of my name and Teoma found 99 using the search for phrase check box.) Teoma is at: Teoma.com
PassMark Security introduced a new online security solution that addresses hoax email (or "phishing") scams. The PassMarks works by showing customers a personalized image when they log in to a Web site ? before asking for a password.
This is an interesting idea, as each image would be unique to the user. Although, it would seem to me to be a problem remembering which image is on which site unless it is handled by a third party and only one is used. But then, That data base would need to be tightly controlled. Full story at: PassMarkSecurity.com
In a move that I hope SBC emulates, Qwest has decided it makes business sense to offer DSL without tying it to a phone line. Of course, this means that cell phone customers don't have to get a land line to connect to DSL. Great idea!! Full story at: RCRNews

Real Software has added Linux application capabilities to its development suite. This move will enable programmers to compile their programs for Mac OS, Windows or Linux without reprogramming the files. This will even allow the importation of programs written in Visual Basic and then compiled for the other OS. Great idea! Full story at: Computer world

This one is describe as being for . However, it is really great for narrowing down searches and covers a good deal of publications that most of us pay a fee to access. This one should help me in my daily activities. Check it out at: Cyber Journalists
Have you noticed lately the tendency for magazines to sell subscriptions by a set fee PLUS a shipping and handling charge? I can't believe that. I mean for most merchandise you have an alternative way to receive it other than by mail. They must feel that we can't add. For example, I just saw an advertisement for Gourmet magazine. It says $1 an issue or $12 a year PLUS a $3 shipping and handling fee. Well, to me that isn't a $1 an issue. Why don't they admit it is $1.25 an issue or $15 a year. After, when you get a subscription you are paying for the shipping and handling by definition. It is pretty hard to get any other type of subscription and be able to enjoy the publication. Please folks, let go back to the traditional way of pricing subscriptions and forget these phony come-ons.
