I have mentioned This Is True before. (It is a weekly newsletter of weird happenings.) They also have a "Bonzer Web Site of the Week." A couple of weeks back they mentioned the Random Number Service. If you have ever done any programming o a computer, you would know that computers really don't randomize very well. This site not only does it for you but shows you why true randomness is important. See it at: Random.org, or in the archives of the Bonzer web sites
For almost anyone but Microsoft, the $613 million fine placed on it, would be ruinous. But when you have $50 Billion+ in the bank, it isn't much and will be made up in short time. Especially since it will do nothing to change Microsoft's practices. They truly feel that they are being picked on unfairly.
They said they would appeal based on the fact that they had cooperated with the prosecution and that the fine was too large when looking at only their European business. IMHO - it is just another slap on the wrist. Full story at : Star-Telegram
Whenever I run into these lists in a mailing list, I like to reprint them. Some of the sites have been mentioned before, but it is always nice to get a new one to the table. This one was on the AUGD mailing list. In response to Help for a PC Switcher Sites:

According to the story, the goal of the developer is to have a robot that can build a complete house in 24 hours. This robot uses wet concrete to build the outline of the walls, in the same way that you might build a wall with toothpaste. Once the outline is complete, the robot would fill in the hollow space in a similar fashion. It would be interesting to see the results.
That's right, we are seeing more and more "long term" sites. It is hard to believe that www.census.gov has been around that long. The press release says that they serve 1.5 million pages per day. Now to top it off, they are adding a new service, called ask.census.gov. This should come in real handy as they have TONS of data, but find the particular piece you want can be really frustrating. See it at: Census.gov, and read the celebration release
