Hearst Pubs switches to Adobe Creative Suite

Looks like Quark Express is going to have to start listening to their customers. Several companies have switched to Adobe's suite and now one of the largest magazine publishers has announced they are going to do it. Read the story at ... gxo.com

IBM announced chips that modify themselves

At the end of July, IBM announced "a chip morphing technology." This technology, based on what is called electromigration allows a chip monitor what is going on and then modify their functions without human intervention.
This process is called eFUSE sounds very promising. Full story on Electronic News at ... reed-electronics.com

Jobs has Cancer Surgery

By now you probably are aware that Steve Jobs had cancer surgery on his pancreas the last weekend of July. It was a successful surgery, but still the stock market reacted by lowering the value of both Pixar and Apple. I really don't see why they discount Pixar, Steve Jobs hasn't done much there in the last several years. Although I assume he is active in the new negotiations being considered for distribution of Pixar films after the Disney contract is completed. Read about the surgery at ... reuters.com

AOL radio show just for kids

AOL is stepping up its family fare, by adding a radio show for kids. It is done weekday evenings from 3-7. It is pretty successful and soon will complete its first year online. Soon, they will add a web cam so that the kids can watch this grownup kid at work. Otherwise it is archived and available for download at other times. So, if you are an AOL subscriber, you should check it out. (Don't know if it requires free registration, but be aware that will cause advertisements to be sent to you via e-mail.) "65% of Email is SPAM"

That is one scary headline! VNUNet.com is reporting that an email monitoring company called Brightmail is saying that sixty five percent of all e-mail sent in June 2004 was spam. So update your spam filter and read this story at ... vnunet.com

"Reading news online? Do it better with RSS"

The above is a headline on ZDNet.com. The article is aimed exclusive at PC users, but the philosophy is the same for Mac. RSS is a great way to get news fed to you. I have suggested RSS as a subject for our local MUG meeting. But so far haven't come up with an "expert" to discuss it. I may have to work up the subject myself. I would have until January to prepare, as our subjects are booked that far in advance. For OS X there are about 10 readers and for classic systems only a couple items listed on VersionTracker.com. The ones listed are freebies or shareware, stand alones or add-ins to Internet Explorer or Safari.

Blog Software and Blog hosting

This article is part of the About.com site. Of course, the easiest way for Mac users to get into Blogs is via iBlog on their .mac account. But, many of us don't have a .mac account. The article in question, is once again aimed at Pc users, but most cases, the hosting computer doesn't care what OS you are using.
Again, this would be a good topic for a MUG meeting and even could be paired with the RSS session. (Better if at the least a different person does each session.) Software for blogging is available via versiontracker.com. A search there will turn up several pieces of software for OS X and classic. (Links article forthcoming)

New phishing scam: Spoofed campaign site

Computer World is reporting that two web sites were setup immediately after the Democratic convention for receiving contributions to the Kerry campaign. These sites which were publicized via e-mail, were setup just to get credit card numbers. No sign that they are politically motivated. Story at ... computerworld.com

Also a new "Nigerian" scam

I received an e-mail last Wednesday from a bank auditor that said he needed to get unclaimed money out of its account before the state required him to turn it over to them. Hopefully by now, all Mac users are aware that these are schemes to take their money, not to share in gains at the expense of someone else. Really folks as they used to say on Hill Street Blues: "Lets be careful out there."

Online Newspaper Readers look for alternatives

Wired.com is reporting that web sites are being set up to allow people to use a made up name for accessing the web sites of publishers. The one they mention is BugMeNot.com.
The problem with using such accounts is that you lose yourown customization. For example, I have custom comic pages set up for the Houston Chronicle's web site. So it wouldn't do for me to switch and that is probably true for most of us news junkies. See ... wired.com

UGLC DVD/Vendor Follow-up

All the attendees at the User Group Leadership Conference in Boston have been asked to send the sponsors an e-mail tell of their appreciation of the sponsorship and how they will present the vendor's product to the membership of their own groups. That is a terrific idea.
But so far, I have only heard from one vendor doing their own follow-up. Joseph Japes of Econ Technologies sent me a terrific e-mail with a pointer to his web site. Their software looks terrific and inexpensive. Just what user group members are looking for. But as a plus, updates are free! For the life of the product!
Thanks to the decision to publish the demo software and vendor information on DVD this year, I couldn't get to any of the material on it. My old Beige G3 (the newest of 3 Macs in my household), just doesn't know about DVDs. So I don't have any idea what I am missing.
It is amazing that more vendors haven't taken the little bit of effort to do their own follow-up. Good work Joseph.
For information about their software, including the terrific looking Portraits & Prints which helps those dealing with digital photos. On the web site, you can download the demo software, manuals in PDF and get tips on using the applications. See it all at ... Econ Technologies
