Mac virus

It had to happen. Someone has finally written a Mac virus that could attack Mac OS X. I said could, because while the script has been written, it apparently hasn't been released. So it is a good time to remember to setup your firewalls and put in virus protection. Read all about Opener (AKA SH/Renopo worm) at the following sites:

Microsoft gets new MUG contact

The new contact is Jonathan Himschoot. Jonathan can be contacted via mugs@microsoft.com but you really should register with Mindshare first. I was able to obtain a copy of Office 2004, for which I have written a review for the Apple Corp of Dallas and will soon be posted on the UGN web site. They also provide materials for members to do presentation or if you are a large group, they will provide a presenter. Additionally, they too have a quarterly mailing. Unfortunately, it is rarely of use to a MUG, but sometimes we get a gem of a mailing. Register and/or update your data at ... www.microsoft.com/mindshare.

"Goodies for the iPod People"

Sounds like a science fiction film. That story in the New York Daily News tells about how we can now download "tattoos" for our iPods from http://www.hp.com/music. That along with the label paper available at most stores that sell HP's iPod by Apple, you can decorate and help protect your iPod. Bet it is hard sometimes to tell who's iPod is who's in a dorm setting.
So get down to your local RadioShack and pick up the paper. The downloads are free. Of course, you can create your own as well. www.hp.com/music

Find the TRUE cost of a new car

We Mac owners have long talked about the total cost of ownership being much lower for Macs than for PCs. Even if the PC starts out much cheaper to begin with. Well, that is also true of automobiles. Each has a different total cost. Depreciation and resale value must also be factored in as we; as cost of fuel, insurance, financing, taxes, fees, maintenance and repairs. Edmonds.com has a calculator that will enable you to find the true cost of ownership of your car. However, this is really important when making that buying decision. Check it out. www.edmunds.com

Digital Mind's new 100GB digital music player begs us to ask: "How much is enough?" Let's see, how many tunes is that? 100,000? If you listen to all of those, at an average of three minutes each, that's more than 5,000 hours or, roughly 208 days if you listen around the clock -- or well over a year if you catch 6 hours of sleep each night.
