Friday, a Virginia judge sentenced one of the top 10 spammers in the world to nine years in prison -- the first felony conviction for spam. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy: Jeremy Jaynes, named one of the top spammers by spam watchdog Spamhaus. This sleaze was convicted in November of using aliases to send more than 10 million e-mails a day. Jaynes, 30, of Raleigh, Va., allegedly made much as $750,000 per month through his spam operation. Jaynes' lawyers are appealing the case on grounds that the Virginia law under which he was prosecuted violated his free speech rights. But then, who's rights did HE violate with millions of spams?
The FTC has settled with Phoenix Avatar and Global web promotions for sending millions of illegal e-mail messages to market their bogus diet patch. Unfortunately they only got fines, and an FTC monkey on their backs scrutinizing their financial books in the future to see if they do it again. They should have been hanged at high-noon. It's seriously too bad the CAN-SPAM act has no real teeth. See: www.npicenter.com, or www.internetnews.com

Worried about personal information on the Internet? A Cambridge startup is offering a service it says gives a measure of control over the personal data the Internet provides. ZoomInfo's computers have compiled individual Web profiles of 25 million people, summarizing what the Web publicly says about each person. The service allows Web surfers to search for their profile, then change it for free.
Seems to me that service may be just as unnerving as the original problem.

They filed in favor of the blogs saying that they are journalists. Hopefully the court will find against Apple on this one. Read the full story at: siliconvalleywatcher.com
