Last year, RealNetworks released a technology called Harmony that for the first time let copy-protected songs from a music store other than Apple's iTunes play directly on the iPod. RealNetworks had independently mimicked the antipiracy tools used by Apple and hadn't gotten Apple's permission first. RealNetworks' Harmony software, once again allows songs to be played directly on an iPod or on a Microsoft-based device, is limited to the company's pay-per-song store. Songs downloaded through the new Rhapsody portable subscription service are compatible only with a small number of Windows-based MP3 players.
A company by the name of LoadPod has been offering nationwide a service that will install music from a CD collection to the owners iPod. (Apple Corp of Dallas has a member that does it too.) Now they are offering training. Who'd have thought that it was neccessary. But I know I have had to go to Apple's web site to find out how to move music to my new Mac. See their web site at: www.loadpod.com
Apparently Steve doesn't appreciate a new book about his return to Apple. It is called "iCon Steve Jobs: The Greatest Second Act in the History of Business". John Wiley & Sons said that Apple has pulled all of its books from the Apple stores. This effort might actually sell more books. Read theday.com story.

This is the book Steve doesn't want published. Lightning never strikes twice, but Steve Jobs has, transforming modern culture first with the Macintosh and more recently with the iPod. With Steve's triumphant return to Apple, his story is better than any fiction. Read more...

The suit accuses Intermix of false advertising and deceptive business practices under New York's general business law and trespass under the state's common law. It is about time that someone started paying for these types of activities. It has cost corporations millions in lost productivity. ... see the full story...

Last Thursday TigerDirect sued Apple over Apple's use of Tiger for the name of its new OS. Seems that they think they have a trademark on the name Tiger. This reminds me of the lawsuit between Business Land and Computerland back in the late '80s. That one was laughed out of court. This one should be too. See all the documents at: www.macmerc.com
After 4 years with Apple i-Books, the Henrico School Board (Richmond, VA) unanimously approved a new 4-year contract with Dell computers. The agreement calls for 15,800 Dell laptop computers at a cost of just over $1,130 each. The total cost of the program for the four years will be pushing $18 million. This is a blow to Apple. ... Apple has launched a new Mac OS X software downloads site with featured applications, including the latest third-party Tiger software...
We told you about this once before, but no one believed us. Now, Washington Post reporter Robert MacMillan reports New York City transportation officials say portable electronic devices, notably iPods, are almost entirely responsible for a spike in subway crime since the beginning of the year. MacMillan writes: "I hoped to write about something different today, but when Apple's diminutive music players -- or rather, their theft -- can bring Gotham City to its knees, we feel obliged to bring you the details."
It's upgrade madness again -- Apple has released QuickTime 7 for Mac OS X 10.3.9 "Panther" including, live player resizing, improved playback controls, surround sound with up to 24 channels of audio, and more. A windows version is expected in the near future. (Does upgrade madness ever stop?) www.apple.com
