Michael Dell wants to sell Apple PCs

Last week, the news stories were every where about how Michael Dell said he was willing to sell Intel PCs with the Mac OS. That is unbelievable after how much he has bad mouthed Apple in the past. Read one of the stories at: news.com.com

Boston: Adam Engst at Boston Mac

Boston Mac has some of the busiest meetings around: every meeting has the usual Q&A, speaker and raffle, but how many groups have a swap meet at every meeting? Join BMUG at the MIT campus for a swap meet, Q&A and a presentation by Adam Engst of TidBITS, billed as the fifth most influential person in the Mac universe. See how they do it. www.bmac.org

Auto record audio cassettes to MP3

This gadget appears to be PC only, but it has auto reverse, so it will record a full 90 minute cassette to the computer. It is a little expensive. It would seem to me that you could set something up similar for about $50, but then it might not be as automatic. Get all the details at: www.thinkgeek.com

KopyMac 2.6b

KopyMac 2.6b by Digitol Disturbance is for those who need to copy files to DOS formatted disks and SMB shares. When I first saw that phrase, I thought "floppy". But, since very few Mac OS X users have floppy drives, what is more importantly, is the MP3 players, including iPods that are formated for DOS. This program can help with those file transfers. Read more about it an download it at: www.tcsn.net

How to create CDs from LPs

I have done this, however my turntable no longer works, so I had to get my brother to complete my collection. But I have been asked this question before, so I was happy to come across a guide on the Internet that tell how to do it and IF it should be done. Read it at: www.connectedguide.com

Back It Up: Free Software ???

Our column of a couple of week ago, prompted a number of complaints that the "shareware" software we recommended is actually "pay" software after the demo. Well, what do you expect for free???
Actually, LaCie's "Silver Keeper" software is pretty swell software -- for free -- and I just got finished testing the software on a new LaCie 250 Gig external drive -- both backing up and syncing folders. It worked quickly and flawlessly. It backs up to all medias, and saves backup "sets" for various backup purposes.
And, yes, it will create a bootable backup of your computer if you have space to store it. No, you don't have to buy a LaCie drive to get it (although if you're going to buy a drive, we can highly recommend LaCie products) just download SilverKeeper at: www.lacie.com

PowerBook Battery Recall

If you use a 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4, or 15-inch PowerBook G4, certain batteries are being recalled and you may be eligible to receive a free replacement battery. See Apple for details at: www.apple.com

iPod worth 10% of Cost

Here you go... for all those who want to throw away your iPod, Apple has announced a free recycling program. You can bring iPods you no longer want to any of Apple's 100 retail stores in the US for environmentally friendly disposal -- completely free.
For your trouble, you'll receive a 10 percent discount on the purchase of a new iPod that day. Isn't it nice to know that rather than replacing the battery, you can throw away the MP3 player you spent several hundred dollars for just a few years ago and it won't cost you a dime? www.apple.com

Podcasting: Is Apple the New RCA?

This comes from CIO magazine of all places. "One key aspect of the podcasting movement -- which is to take live radio shows and make them available for download to mobile players immediately after they air -- is that it appears to be too early to identify any significant money-oriented trends.
"But podcasting has made an impression on industry research firms, which have assigned analysts to cover the area even before any profits trickle in. "It's still very early," said Yankee Group analyst Su Li Walker.
"He has organized an animation movie studio that has produced some of the biggest box-office hits of all time, and made an unprecedented deal with the music labels to sell songs over the Internet. The promise of Jobs to make Apple the dominant player in podcasting should not be taken lightly." ... see the full story...

This is a way to avoid printing out all those MapQuest directions. Use PodQuest to store the directions from MapQuest on your iPod. But is supports more than MapQuest. 8 other sites, including one that covers Europe and another that covers Australia. It is a $9.95 shareware program.

The Osborne Effect?

The old rumor columnist Cringely takes a different look at Osborne this past week and apparently what "everyone" remembers is wrong. He says that Osborne actually introduced a new machine with a smaller screen that cost more than the Kaypro. Thus everyone switched to Kaypro. Not just wait for a new PC compatible machine. Apple releases WebObjects as a free application

Apple has released WebObjects deployment software for free with Xserves (as part of the Mac OS X Server package) in June 2002, but the move to a wider distribution is regarded as significant - not least because until May 2000 the software cost $50,000._While not software on the tip of every Mac users tongue, WebObjects sits behind several significant implementations - the most famous current example being Apple's iTunes Music Store._WebObjects has been widely adopted by some of the world's largest companies, it drove the original Dell store; and has been exploited by Disney, Deutsche Bank and the BBC._The applications built using the software can run using a browser, as fully interactive stand alone Java desktop applications, or even as standards-based Web services.
