Safari increases market share in September

NetApplications, a provider of Web-based applications that measure, monitor and market Web sites for the Small to Medium Enterprise (SME), announced its monthly Web site traffic analysis. In September, Netscape Navigator and Apple's Safari continued their modest gains for the second straight month, while FireFox lost market share for the second time this year. Safari had 2.39% up from 2.20%. and Netscape usage grew from 2.02% to 2.16%. Read more...

Bluetooth Headset Repair

A reader to XLRYourMac.com reported a problem with using his Bluetooth headset. It seems, that he already had a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. For some reason, the Mac couldn't see the additional device. He later wrote in and explained a fix. (10.4.3 is suppose to fix the issue.) Read his fix and more...

Made for iPod licensing

I don't know who started the "made for" licensing idea. But I think it is a good idea. Except, if rumor is true, Apple is asking for up to 10% of the product selling price as a fee. That seems rather extreme, especially since Apple gains from sales of all these devices, because they encourage the purchase of iPods. Read more...

EchoStar Unveils PocketDISH

EchoStar got the jump on Apple by one day by announcing a handheld video player called PocketDISH, which can download and play back content from the company's DISH Network satellite TV service.
Three PocketDish models are being sold by EchoStar's retail partners like RadioShack and Sears today with screen size ranging from two to seven inches and at prices between $329 and $599. You do have to have a subscription to Dish, but the devices can up to 20 hours to over 40 hours of content, including MP3 files and digital photographs. ... see the full story...

Speaking of Apple's video iPod

Apple did have that "One more thing" conference last week. (And apparently having another announcement this week.) Last week, they announced new iMacs with built in video cameras, new iTunes store features and of course, the new video iPod. You can see the presentation (Requires Quicktime 7) at Apple.com or see it here

A mention deserves a mention

The Northeast Ohio Apple Corp mentioned the InfoManager in its own newsletter this issue. The issue has a Halloween theme, keeping with the monthly meeting's date of Oct 31st.
I do think they got the pronoun wrong on the cover for their president, but otherwise it looks like a really good newsletter and I enjoyed reading Phil Sharpiro's humorous articles. (I think I remember reading from him in the Apple PI Journal several years ago.) Download this PDF newsletter

Flu shots

I highly recommend that those of us in the "high risk" categories get flu shots. I am planning on getting mine at church on October 16th. (Yesterday by the time you read this.) But sometimes it isn't easy to find them. Research Buss (http://www.researchbuzz.org) has recommended the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's Flu Shot Finder. It offers a simple zip code search to find a table of places to get shots with place name, address, date and times. A search using my zip came up with grocery and pharmacies that are offering shots. See it at ... aafa.org

Quotes: Buckminster Fuller and A. Lou Vickery

"You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."
      - Buckminster Fuller

"Four short words sum up what has lifted most successful individuals above the crowd: a little bit more. They did all that was expected of them and a little bit more."
      - A. Lou Vickery

"The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what we want most for what we want at the moment."
