Macintosh History

I have mentioned this site before, but it keeps growing. Read about the history of the Mac from those who made it happen at: folklore.org

Google Sightseeing

You know you have it made when other people take advantage of your service. Google itself has combined Google Local with satellite maps to give you some great views. Say of your home town. (Here is mine )
But here is a site that that uses Google's Maps to let you do some sightseeing around our planet. You can even suggest sites. Try the Sightseeing blog at googlesightseeing.com

PowerPoint Presentations

I got the above web site be reading Patrick Crispen's Internet Tourbus newsletter. He also provides PowerPoint presentations on various subjects that can easily be adapted for user group presentations. They are in Powerpoint and Flash formats. Google is not just one of the topics, but up to 4 of them:
* Google 101: Stop Searching and Start FINDING (Note: last updated 12/03)
* Google 201: Advanced Googology (Updated 11/05) Lots of tips here
* Google 301: Über Google (Updated 10/05) Talks about Google's newer tools. Google
* 70-20-10: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Everyone's Favorite Search Engine

This is a combination of the last two, but also gets behind the sceens and give an idea of what the future may bring. Think I will use this one myself.
There are other topics as well. I have known Patrick for about 15 years since the days when Prodigy was an independent company and charged a flat monthly fee. He was well know on Prodigy's Macintosh Bulletin Board. But he mostly uses the tools that he wants and the presentations are wide ranging. (BTW - we are working on a surprise of our own and would love to have your Keynote or Powerpoint presentations to let other groups use.) Take Control Books

Another topic we are revisiting. Adam Engst started doing these electronic books a while back. He has a lot of topics already produced, but is taking suggestions for more. Vote on suggested topics and add your own suggestions

Helping Windows users switch

Speaking of "Take Control" books... As easy as Mac OS X is to use, making the jump from Windows is still a daunting proposition -- unless you have help from Scott Knaster and his latest Take Control book...

Cisco acquires Scientific-Atlanta

Cisco who has lost its luster over the last few years is making an effort to be relevant again by buying Scientific-Atlanta last week. It is somewhat outside of its traditional networking activities, but since prediction are all about the "digital hub", this would be their bid to come into our living rooms. The combination of these cable boxes and networking could be formable but certainly point us in the direction Apple started supporting several years ago. ... see the full story...

Google Patches Gmail

Last week, Google quietly patched a security bug in its Gmail service. It modified Gmail to keep hackers from using a vulberabilty that could allow hackers to take complete control of a victim's Gmail account. However, Google spokesperson Sonya Boralv said that a successful attack would require the victim to open up an authenticated token and willingly give it to the attacker. So it really wasn't an issue. (BTW - if you need a Gmail account I believe I still have a lot of invites left.) Read more...

Sony's CD DRM

Sony recently dropped its digital rights management that was installing software on a PC to keep people from making legal copies of the disk. It left an opening for hackers to get into a PC. (They are recalling 4.7 million CD after a computer virus took advantage of the weakness.) But now according to Wired, another issue is that they used an open source program to create this software. That of course is against most open source agreements. ... see the full story...

NetNewsWire

I previously touted FeedDemon on the PC as my favorite RSS reader. It has a good filtering system that I used extensively in my previous position. I couldn't find anything that worked as well on the Mac. Well, since I upgraded to Tiger, NetNewsWire has become my default reader. It is well worth the $24.95 shareware fee. It uses Spotlight to do searches of the feeds it has downloaded and can even setup permanent filters and really helps when doing these articles. It also does tabbed browsing within the program. You can get a copy at all the download sites, or go direct at: ranchero.com

Skunk in the (iPod) Woodpile

Someone is not telling the truth in the debate whether or not Apple will remove copyprotection from CDs... TMC is reporting that the EMI Group record label said music from its copy-protected CDs will soon play on Apple's iPod digital music players, but Apple says the information is not true. This will be one to follow if you want to get the new CDs onto your iPods...

iTunes syncs to any MP3 player

Thrupp 1.2 is an update that lets iTunes users sync their library to any kind of MP3 player -- any device that plays MP3s and mounts in the Finder. Better yet, if a library isn't in MP3 format Thrupp automatically transcodes as it copies. Version 1.2 adds profiles for popular phone models to ease the setup process. The new profiles also support Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, Palm, Treo and Windows Mobile devices. The update also adds interface refinements, bug fixes, and offers the ability to create album subfolders. Thrupp 1.2 is available for $15, and requires Mac OS X 10.3. Download file: thrupp-1.2.dmg and ... see the full story...

Quotes: Leno, Smith and R.D. Laing

"Here's something to think about: How come you never see a headline like 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?"
      - Jay Leno, Comedian

"Look at everything as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time. "Then your time on earth will be filled with glory."
      - Betty Smith, Novelist

"We live in a moment of history where change is so speeded up that we begin to see the present only when it is already disappearing."
      - R. D. Laing, Writer

Have a great week... (See last week)
