MS Office for Mac

During the Keynote at MacWorld, Roz Ho the head of the Macintosh Business Unit made the commitment to keep producing Office for the Mac for at least the next 5 years. Microsoft has long said that they make more off of Mac Office than they do the PC. Partially because the margins are larger, but also because there is less technical support to Mac people. They have even offered a 50% discount to anyone who buys a new Mac this month. ... see the full story...

Developers make effort to get Enterprises to accept Mactel

In an article, eWeek tells that Microsoft and other developers are on track to create Intel-native Mac software. Of course, they mention that Microsoft announced that it had signed an agreement with Apple to develop Office for the Mac OS X for at least the next five years for both Intel and PowerPC Macs. They also will port Virtual PC for Mac to the new Macs, enabling Mac users to run Windows at near-native speeds. The next version of Office for the Mac will use the same XML-based file formats of Office 12 for Windows. Others who have products to be developed for Mactel are:
* ThinkFree Corp, has ThinkFree Office Server Edition
* Zimbra Inc. will ship a new messaging server positioned as an alternative to Microsoft Exchange, but running on Mac OS X.
* Small Tree Communications demonstrated BlazeFS, a new multi-gigabit remote file transfer application for Mac OS X. The software is targeted at workflows with very large file requirements
* Kerio Technologies Inc. announced that it has acquired the WebSTAR HTTP, FTP and mail servers from 4D. The company will port the servers to Windows, Linux and Mac OS X on Intel Macs. ... see the full story...

Spring Cleaning 8.0 Announced

Allume Systems have announced the release of Spring Cleaning 8.0 that really cleans your Mac. Features include: empty almost any cache, batch renaming of photos, synchronize two folders, find photos and move to iPhoto and music to iTunes.
For a long time, I wouldn't recommend Spring Cleaning since you could do most of the same things using Find if you knew what you were doing, and if you didn't know what you were doing, it was dangerous. However, the flexibility of Spring Cleaning has improved over the years and it has gotten hard with OS X to do the cleaning of items, including uninstalling applications. I have even seen a program promoted as "the uninstaller Apple forgot."
Until the end of January, you can get the NEW Spring Cleaning 8.0! for only $29.99 which is normally priced at $49.99

Microsoft to produce Mouse & Keyboard for the Mac

According to TechWeb News, MS plans to release the above mentioned items this summer. It will not have the Apple logo on the command key, but have a clover instead. It will be designed specificly for the Mac. We posted it to the blog two hours after it was released: Sorry, no Apple for you, Microsoft

MYOB to continue

Like the author of this article, I have appreciated the fact that MYOB has never abandoned the Mac like Intuit did for about 4 years with its accounting package.
What he surprised me with was the fact that the Australian company spun off its U.S. operations to the U.S. management team. At Expo, MYOB announced FirstEdge v2. I have used FirstEdge v1 for our MUG and believe it is the most flexible package I have seen, although I admit it does have a learning curve, and I am still using it. Read more...

MacBook Pro vs. Powerbook vs. Acer

Tristan Louis has placed comparison charts in his blog. He compares a 15" MacBook Pro to a 14" Powerbook and to an Acer Travelmate 8200. All three notebooks are priced at $1999. My MUG had a similar chart comparing a Dell notebook to the MacBook Pro and things were pretty even ... see the full story...
