This past week, I took my iMac in for service via my warrantee. Hardin Computer is a long time Apple dealer near Fort Worth. In fact, with the Apple Corp of Dallas had their 20th Anniversary party several years ago, Hardin provided them with 20 years of Apple computers as an exhibit. They recently moved to a smaller store in the same center where they have always been and seem to be emphasizing service over actual sales, as no computers were on display. But then, the move may not be complete. They did get my iMac back to me in 24 hours. Couldn't have asked for better service. The problem was a logic board that they had to replace. Guess I should get Apple Care now. This is the first time I have taken a desk computer into a repair center since about '87. I have always done my own repairs. Congrats to Hardin's.

Over the last couple of weeks we have had all kinds of news about how the Mac is now vulnerable to those skumbags that troll the Internet with viri, spyware, worms, Trojans and other malware.
But the Mac is no more vulnerable than ever. Just that now because of these stories, more people are aware of it. The biggest problem still remains that we could pass on a Windows virus to our PC friends by not knowing that it was enclosed in an e-mail we forwarded. Mostly, we need to be aware of what we are doing and it helps to run one of the anti-virus programs. And tell our members to be careful, but don't try to panic them. The speculations are ripe about what Apple is going to announce on Tuesday. Shaw Wu is predicting a wide screen "MacBook" to replace the iBook. He is also predicting that Apple will announce all its Pro software will be intel native.
He believes that Apple will be providing full length movies for download and provide an iPod that will have better TV connectivity. It will be extremely interesting to see what actually happens. Here's the full story
I believe I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago. AOL & Yahoo plan on selling an e-mail service to bulk mailers that will guarantee delivery to their member's mail boxes. This whole concept puzzles me. I can see what they think they will gain, but in reality, what they will probably do is drive more of their members to other services. In Yahoo's case, that might not be to bad, as they aren't getting money directly from them, but AOL is.
Meanwhile, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is helping to setup a coalition to fight the whole concept. Read more
I am sure that you are aware, that Apple doesn't make the scrollwheel on the iPod that everyone loves. But who does? And how was it developed? ... see the full story...
It didn't take long for this to happen. This article says that there still are some issues, but that those should be completed soon. It really is interesting how hard Windows people want to be able to run Mac OS X on non-Apple Intel machines. Read more...
Mike Evangelist, who used to be at Apple is calling for a boycott of new HD-TV products. The reason he gives is that the industry has conspired to eliminate "fair use" in the development of these products. Therefore, the consumer - (US) will not be able to actually ever own music, video and movies. In the Mike Evangelist blog

Education/Evolving's report "Real Impact: Student Opinions for a Change" is divided into two major sets of findings. The first set describes our nation's increasingly tech-savvy students and the various ways in which they use computers and the Internet. The second outlines students' frustrations with our nation's still text-dominated schools, as well as students' ideas for how adult education policy and school designers could better meet their needs.
