Intel iMac: faster than a speeding G5?

In the second part of an article examining the Intel iMac, Ken Mingis gives a review of the Intel iMac. He basically says that it is worth the upgrade IF you aren't using a major application that hasn't been converted to Universal format. ... see the full story...

iMac duz Windows

Jason Snell has reported in his Macworld article that a pair of enterprising hackers got Windows XP to boot on an Intel-based Mac, and won almost $14,000 for their troubles. Jason says:
[quote]
We at Macworld sacrificed one of our iMacs and joined forces with PC World to see this first-hand. And indeed, thanks to the hard work of PC World's Danny Allen, we've got a working Windows iMac.

OnMac reports

Load Windows XP on the Intel Mac Now! Thanks to Blanka and Narf for coming up with this solution. The total prize of 13,854 has been given to the winners. See: onmac.net

Jason says the project is ongoing, now, to figure out how to run Windows XP as efficiently as possible on Apple's hardware. Read the full story

ABC News also picks up the lead...
Colin Nederkoorn, 23, a shipping broker in Houston, says he just wants to streamline his work: instead of using his Apple PowerBook computer for some programs and a Windows PC for other tasks, he'd like to just use one machine. That's why he started the contest back in January to goad programmers. PayPal donations provided the cash for the prize See: abcnews.go.com

New hope for Mac CAD Outcasts...

There is one area where Mac users cannot replace Windows software with a Mac-enabled substitute. That's the CAD industry. With the news of the INTEL Macs running Windows software, a ray of light may have been shed on poor, orphaned Mac users trying to enter the world of Architecture, Industrial Design, or most Engineering disciplines. ... see the full story...

Smoking Macs: MacBook Catches Fire

Thursday, Leander Kahney posted censored pictures of the Torched MacBook Power Connector. So you see, I'm not the only one with a Mac that caught fire. According to Leander:
[Quote]
The Dutch MacNed website has copies of the controversial pictures of a MagSafe power connector that were removed from Flickr on Thursday at the request of Apple.
The magnetic MagSafe power connector allegedly burned up. Its owner, Rogier Mulder, posted some pictures to Flickr, which immediately caught the attention of Apple. He was asked to remove the pictures while the company investigates.

He writes on Flickr: [Quote]
"Apple support responded very well (thanks Klaas) and fast. Before I called our local Apple support line, the dutch engineers were already contacted by their US collegues (who saw the pics) to inquire if I already called in. I'm getting a new Macbook asap and I will return my current one."

PageStream 5.0

I have been listing to a lot of people asking for an inexpensive alternative to Quark and InDesign. PageStream could be the. It runs on MacOS, Windows, Amiga and even Linux on PPC. The cost is $99 for the first time users. This could well be the "alternative" DTP program in the same sense that made GraphicsConverter the "alternative" program to many graphics programs. Free iPod takes privacy toll

Wired has an article about how mailing lists that promise privacy of your e-mail address get sold. Makes it hard to believe anyone. This includes a company famous for promising a free iPod.
Fred Comments:
Lynn, this is the one several people asked about in the Apple UG discussion list late last year. At the time, we did some pretty extensive research and found every one of the "Free iPod" (or other equipment) ads to be bogus, or at least a serious privacy risk. I reported the research results to both Cnet and Wired. Even though it took nearly five months, they've finally picked up on the story. This is important reading for ALL computer users -- and particularly important for those running Google Ads. During our research, Google refused to ban the ads, even though we could prove they were bait and switch scams where it would be virtually impossible for the registrant to get the prize, even after sharing seriously sensitive personal data.

Folks, this is one legal scam that you MUST avoid. ... see the full story...

Mailbag: Indexing software for Mac?

Reader, M.B. in Oklahoma City writes:
Is there software for the Macintosh that will electronically create indexes for books?

Unfortunately, M.B., there are no inexpensive solutions for creating indexes -- however there are several GOOD solutions: Quark XPress and InDesign, and FrameMaker. These programs generate indexes, table of contents and footnote bibliographies, but are expensive.
