Can Opener for Mac OS X and Windows

Fred and I have been big proponents of Can Opener since its first appearance on the Mac fifteen years ago. Since files under classic had a data fork, it made a lot of sense that a program could open the data fork and ignore all the application specific formatting codes that were in the resource fork.
I remember helping a women recover her book that was in AppleWorks. She had been working on it for six months without backing it up. The file became corrupted. Can Opener was able to recover all the text, the formatting she had to do.
I figure that opening files in OS X and Windows formats would be some what more difficult. However, you'll find it at Abbot Systems Abbot Systems

Word Processing on the Mac and email

Here is a web site that lists a lot of the email and word processing applications that have been available for the Mac. Since it doesn't list Pages, I would think it hasn't been up dated for a while. However, it does list a lot of good alternatives to Word. See it at: www.emailman.com

Boot Camp

Unless you been asleep, you have probably heard of the Apple announcement that came last week for Boot Camp. Boot Camp is beta software that allows you to install Windows XP on an new Intel Mac and boot from either XP or under the next Mac OS X "Leopard." See the Wall Street Journal article , and read : Boot Camp Public Beta

XP Discussion

Meanwhile there has been a lot of discussion about what the dual boot capabilities mean and where it will go from here. Some think it is the beginning of the end of the Mac as a separate computer -- that is, developers will quit developing specifically for the Mac because "they can boot into Windows". Some think it will mean that Apple will soon not only be selling Windows pre-installed on their machines, but will make Mac OS X available for other OEMs. At least, the discussion is interesting. Here are some places to get started.

Just how safe is your password?

Following up on our "Password is NOT a four letter word!" article, this UK site, has a chart for the maximum time it would take a computer or a cluster of computers to guess a password. For example, a 6 number password could take as long as 10 seconds to guess. But more than likely would be instantaneous.
So how many numbers are on your ATM card password?
