IMHO - Summer time doldrums

Summer is nearly hear. I am curious about how groups spend their summer. I know that some take the summer off. I have always thought that was a mistake for most groups. It is hard to get members to return after three months off. But I can see why university groups would do it. Others sponsor special outings for "social" get togethers. Picnics are big, but there could be other ideas too. Please come to our blog and add your comments. User Group Network blog at: www.ugnn.com

Spring and summer reading

We've updated the User Group Bookshelf with more than 50 all new books in all categories. You'll also find ongoing book reviews under the "Books" topic of the InfoManager blog. If you were shopping for a book anyway, we urge you to shop UGN first to see if the title is reviewed. (Just use the browser's "Find" function, or click on convenient "Search" links around the site) Clicking the book will take you to Amazon, but help support UGN and the InfoManager at the same time. www.user-groups.net

Frank Barnako in MarketWatch said that a number of the early bloggers, including Dave Winer, Robert Scoble of Microsoft, Russel Beattie and Slate's Sarah Hepol have announced that in order to have more balance in their lives they are going to quit their blogs. Marketing and the Halo Effect

"Understanding Marketing Psychology and the Halo Effect - What Apple's iPod and Motorola's Razr Can Teach Us" That is the title of an article in Ad Age, a magazine for the advertising industry. They talk about how the iPod has helped Apple sell other products just as the Razr has helped Motorola sell other cell phones. ... see the full story...

An article in eWeek says "Boot Camp Users Need Support". It goes on to say that Macintosh users wanted to run AutoCAD, MS Project and Visio. Now they can using Boot Camp. Read more at eWeek, including an opinion that Boot Camp frees applications from the operating system (Read More)

60-Seconds #183: Photos wrecked my email

Thursby Software

For a number of years, Thrusby has help Macintosh users to network their machines on a Windows Network. Their most famous product is DAVE, which allows users to share files and printers on Windows. Additionally, they have ADmitMac, the only Mac product that supports NTLMv2 and supports Windows Server 2003. The third product is MacNFS which is a client for using NFS architecture, which allows Macs and other Unix machines to share data.

Thursby has presented to Cowtown MUG a couple of times in the past. It is good to see that they are still around and presenting such useful software. DAVE v6 and ADmitMac v3 are available for Intel Macs. Get evaluation software

X-Win32 PC X Server on a Mac

According to E-CommerceTimes.com, tests of several OpenGL-based X Windows applications run up to 4 times faster on a 2 GHz dual-core Pentium iMac as opposed to a Windows PC with a 2 GHz Pentium processor.

This would indicate that others besides people who just occasionally use Windows applications might be interested in using Boot Camp. Read the full article

The Rest of Us web based newsletter

The Rest of Us, a Chicago User Group produces one of its monthly newsletters in format for the web. The really fun part is the "One More thing..." tab. (A video that combines many that I have seen before, but several that I do not have in my library.) Download the April 2006 newsletter

Firefox Passwords

This is scary, The TourBus.com shows this in their latest newsletter, "if you use Firefox follow these steps:
1. Launch Firefox.
2. Go to Tools > Options (Mac OS X go to Preferences under the Firefox menu
3. Click on the "Privacy" padlock icon
4. In newer versions of Firefox, just click on the "Passwords" tab.
5. Click on the "View Saved Passwords" button.
. Click on the "Show Passwords" button.
7. When Firefox asks you if you'd really like to show your passwords, click on the "Yes" button.
8. Wail and gnash your teeth."
So it might not be a good idea to use "save passwords" unless you have first password protected this list at the OS log-on level or at least use the " Set Master Password" button in Firefox. See more Internet Tourbus
