Fred says: "I believe I'll stay with the current technology for a while yet ... after learning about expanding batteries, busting laptop shells, mysterious "moo" sounds, discoloring cases and other woes, I was happy I didn't buy the MacBook Pro last week. I got another Aluminum G4 instead. Whew.
Oh, by the way, for those of you who read my "Letter to Mr. Jobs" ... the third of the three iMacs has now suffered the melt-down fate, just like the other two. ... keep reading.
The Fink Binary Distribution 0.8.1 has been announced for Macintosh PowerPC and Intel processors. They have provided more than 1700 packages compiled for Intel and more than 1900 for the PowerPC machines. They do hedge and say that since the Intel programs should still be considered beta. Here is a guy who took apart several iMacs and installed them into a case that allowed him to rack them. It is something to see. I have always admired people who understood hardware that well. I have done any soldering on a computer since my Apple II days and that one resulted in the replacement of a chip socket after I dropped some hot solder in it. See the details
Free Mac software. A web site that is dedicated to just that.
Fred Comments: This is a pretty clean, albeit slow, web site that you should try. Unlike the other shareware/freeware sites, this one has very little spam. (Although they seem to be begging for it on every page.) Let's hope they stay true to their philosophy:
"At FreeMacWare.com, we try to be just a little different from the other download sites. We only review freeware for Mac OS X, and we aren't trying to find all the freeware out there -- just the best." www.freemacware.com
This web site says it doesn't handle thousands of files, just the best of the lot for Windows computers. Check it out yourself and let us know what you think: www.onlythebestfreeware.com
A recent article in Forbes magazine claims that 50 Cent and his manager are negotiating a branding deal with Apple Computer. I heard about this even on the national network news programs. I really can't see how he will be able to get Apple to change its basic business model. But if he can get a headless iMac that hooks up to a TV, then it could work. But isn't that the Macmini? Best Buy quit handling Apple's computers in the "fruit flavor" days when the only difference between the 5 different "Yum" machines was the colors. The story at the time was that Apple was insisting that they purchase the same number of each color.
But the real problem from Apple's side was similar to many other retailers. The sales people would try to stir the Apple customer to a PC where they could make better SPIFs.
These new sales people are actually trained in Cupertino. So maybe there will be a new strength to Apple sales in the stores. Sounds somewhat like the program at CompUSA. Hope it works. Full story

The Register's Developer section has an article telling how "William Henry Gates the Third's philanthropic work will one day lead to him being canonized. But that he could also be canonized ast he man who invented the PC.
In the book, "They Made America : From the Steam Engine to the Search Engine: Two Centuries of Innovators" the author points out that this isn't true. The article gives more detail, but it isn't hard to believe that CP/M has been forgotten as among the first of the operating systems. It is good that someone does fact checking, isn't it. Of course, not everyone may agree with these facts either. Read the article
