Mac in Africa

For three weeks, I got to experience using a Mac in a 3rd world. Here are some reflections on email and why NOT to use Mac.com if you plan to travel... Fred reports in "This Old Mac"

Matterform Media

Matterform Meda has developed utility software for use on the Mac. Yank, may be the only uninstaller on the Mac. Most of it don't need it much, but it may help out some of the newer users.
* Sonar, is a file security monitor.
* Spamfire 2, is software to monitor e-mail.
* Link Mapper, for easy web site mapping.
* Downtime is a parental control program.
* Vaccine protects web sites from spammers.
There is more, check them all out

IconDrawer

The Mac has long been associated with the easy changing of icons for its applications and files. I remember one series that were like a file cabinet when stacked together. I remember Dr. Mac showing us how he had one drawer setup to Unstuff one type of file, another drawer for a different file and the third drawer was the Stuffing application. But the three drawer looked like a single icon. IconDrawer has a series of free icons that can be used on Mac or Windows. Of course, they also have some for a fee. www.icondrawer.com

Sony Toughens Internet Policies

Sony is trying to remove unauthorized resellers from the Internet and require their resellers to follow a uniform policy regarding information requirements. So you may see fewer sites offering Sony products in the future. Of course, that also probably means fewer bargains. (Free registration required) Read the TWICE article

Portable Rotary Cellular Phone

Yes, a fellow has taken an old dial (rotary) phone and turned into a cell phone. Really impressive, if not very portable. He also now sells them for $400-500, but the site includes step-by-step instructions for making your own. (Read More)

Switch between application windows.

This has been one thing I like about Windows, that is, the ability to switch between windows in the same application. I didn't know it could be done. Then on a mailing list I get, a member suggested using Alt-~ (tilde) as the keys to do that. However, the Mac keyboard doesn't have an Alt key. He meant to say Command-~. See more keyboard shortcuts

Picasa Web Albums

On the AUGD mailing list, there was some discussion of this software for the Mac. I looked at Picasa when it was first announce, I believe over a year ago. At that time, it was a Windows only product. Google has now released an iPhoto plug-in that uploads photos from iPhoto to the Picasa albums. In this case, Picasa become more of a "Flickr" type product that is easily set up by iPhoto in somewhat the same way that .Mac or iWeb is also managed by iPhoto.
Download the software
During the discussion, the Ambassador of Syracuse MUG gave InfoManager a nice plug. Thanks Paul.

Apple share fall on options irregularities

Apparently, analysts and stock purchasers are worried that Apple's problems with stock option irregularities might cause Steve Jobs' resignation. Of course, that would be the worst case issue. Apple's $9.2 billion in the bank will certainly cover any possible fines. The CEO of another company has been forced to resign under similar circumstances. Read the Reuters' coverage

Windows Games to Run on Mac OS X

TransGaming has unveiled a program called Cider, which they say will to allow game developers to port their games designed for computers running Microsoft Windows on Intel-based Apple Macintosh machines. This may enable more companies to move games to the Mac and cause more switchers.
They also have a program called Cedega, for end-users to run Wndow's games on Intel-based Macs. ... see the full story...

Carbon Copy Cloner v 2.3

I haven't looked at CCC in quite awhile, but it is compatible with Tiger and will work under Rosetta on the new Intel Macs. But what intrigued most about this site, was the step by step process to backing up OS X without using CCC. That is, using the Unix command line. Download the software
