Useful Mac OS X Software

Another list of useful and free or cheap software. This one recommends: Pando for sending large files, Visor provides a transparent terminal window over other apps and SuperDuper for backups. There is more, but I shouldn't spoil his list. Check it out

Ready,Set,Go! is BACK

Many of you remember using RSG back at the dawn of desktop publishing -- which was no longer supported after the introduction of OS 9 for the Mac. I just found out it's been upgraded and is better than ever...

Portable FireFox & Thunderbird

The latest "fad" in software is to have software on your flash drive that will work no matter whatever computer to which you are attached. Of course, that means having both platforms appropriate application, but they would read the same preferences so bookmarks, extensions, history, cookies, etc. would be the same. Since I use a PC at work and a Mac at home, this sounds ideal. I wonder if Filemaker has a portable version? But then, I couldn't afford to buy two copies of Filemaker.

However this might be enough to get me to switch from Mail on my Mac. Get your Portable FireFox ... and Thunderbird

PictureSync

Want to upload pictures from your photo storage software on your computer to Flickr, Fotki, Zoto, Buzznet, FotoTime, Shutterfly and more? PictureSync is available for both Mac and Windows and can be used for free. (They do encourage a $14 purchase if used a lot. On the Mac, it works with iPhoto, iView Media Pro, and/or Aperture as well as the normal drag and drop of the Finder. I just downloaded it, and want to give it a try, but since it and most of the online services are free, why not give it a try? PictureSync

PhilMUG

I was just on the web site of the Phllipines MUG. They do something pretty unique as they have graphical representation of some of the forum subject floating across the top of the page. Just click on the one you want to know more about and read it. A nice feature. See it at: www.markspace.com

MySync

My Sync of Mark/Space allows Mac to Mac syncing without using .Mac. MySync provides synchronization of personal information, such as Address Book contacts, iCal calendars and Mail accounts, between multiple computers running Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger."

Mark/Space has been doing Missing Sync products that connect a Mac to handheld devices from Dell, Palm, Sony and others.

Bloggers who make cash

Business 2.0 magazine is running an article about bloggers who are making big bucks and even give some tips on how to setup a blog. TechCrunch.com is one of the blogs that they note is making lots of cash with advertising. But they also point out that just using Adsense or other such listings doesn't help much. A new start-up called Federated Media Publishing is acting as an advertising agent. The catch there is that they select blogs that have already become popular. Then sale advertising so that both they and the blog makes the cash. Up to 10 times what the blog was making before with just Adsense type advertisements. Read the article then... See TechCrunch

Mac Pro Beats Dell on Price

Robert Weston has an Associated Press article on the Washington Post web site with the above headline. He says that he even called Dell and got Dell spokesman, Marco Pena to agree that the Mac Pro is cheaper than the Dell Precision Workstation that is similarly equipped, although Mr. Pena also points out that with a 3 year warranty added to the Mac, there wouldn't be nearly as much a difference. But the Mac would still be cheaper. See the full story...

Macitt

By now, most of us have at least heard of Dig.com Now there is a similar themed web site for us Mac users. It is called Macitt.com. This site tells you what the top stories are and lets you comment on them. See it at: www.macitt.com

Guy's Blog

Guy's company, Garage.com has long been the place to go to learn about doing start-ups. Of course, his blog also is in that realm. I especially like his blog's subtitle: "Blogger. n. Someone with nothing to say writing for someone with nothing to do." See what our favorite Mac Evangelist is up to now: blog.guykawasaki.com

Quotes: Cavett, Michener, Earhart and Dr. Seuss

"If you don't think every day is a good day, just try missing one."
      Cavett Robert

"The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he's always doing both."
      - James A. Michener

"Some of us have great runways already built for us. If you have one, take OFF! But if you don't have one, realize it is your responsibility to grab a shovel and build one for yourself and for those who will follow after you."
      - Amelia Earhart

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
      - Dr. Seuss
