Washington Apple Pi Presents "Socket in Pocket" Workshop At Tysons Corner VA Apple Store... next week! Don't miss it
These are two ways to learn about Macs. TeachMac.com is a clearing house for video training from various instructors, in fact, you can submit a video and they will distribute it paying you 50% of what they take in. They provide their own video reader to the customer.
ScreenCastsOnline is also video instruction. They also provide free versions of their videos via podcast. You can subscribe to that on their web site. There is also a paid subscription options that gives higher resolution and additional instructions.
I remember running basic Microsoft Excel classes on AOL for about a year. Then AOL wanted to use my talents exclusively for free. I quit then. As far as I can tell those type of exclusivity contracts are not available on these services.

Paul Landers has taken his Macintosh G5 and added LEDs to the front of his Mac so that it displays the time. He gives details of how he did it, but I think you would need some previous exposure to soldering and electronics to make use of his instructions. But if you are interested, give it a try. Some of you may already know about Fred's "other" web site, the Design Center. Each September and October he features the "Fonts Festival" focusing on everything fonts and typography. If you're into DTP or just like fonts, here's a chance to get the best of the year.
Speaking of fonts...
I have had several friends in past that believed that there was no such thing as having to many fonts. Of course, they sometimes had problems from corrupted fonts or slow machines when applications were opening. Here are a couple of places to get fonts:
* General fonts: www.lotsafonts.com
* Fonts for Halloween: ghostlyfonts.com
and, of course, the 15th Annual Fonts Festival
Yes, that Moose. The Talking Moose has been available for the Macintosh for 20 years. Now it is available in Universal format for Mac OS X 10.3 or better. Amazing and LOTS of fun!! Alhtough, you may want to set the preferences to "rarely" for it to show up. You can get it at: www.zathras.de
One of the candidates for governor of Texas said an a tour guide to Austin that he wrote: "In Texas, it is all Coke,... unless its Dr. Pepper." This web site contains a map that shows where it is called Pop, Soda, Coke or other. The statistics were collected by a couple of professors from Oklahoma's East Central Oklahoma. Personally, I grew up calling it pop or Coke, but once I got a paper route at 11, I always ordered Dr. Pepper and got pretty upset when only Pibb was available. (It ain't the same.) See the map at: popvssoda.com
The author of this blog, reviews a number of software options for capturing video from the Mac screen. Including: ScreenRecord, Screen Movie Recorder, Screen Mimic, iShowU, Snapz Pro XSee the FreeMacBlog site at: freemacblog.com
Another version of the same idea but in some ways more complete is at: musingsfrommars.org
They both come up with the same conclusion as to what is best: iShowU, NOT Snapz Pro. (Read More)
Of course, Fred has maintained all along that Snapz *IS* the best screen capture in the biz -- capturing not only images, but video and audio as well. Now, Ambrosia Software has rolled out Snapz Pro X 2.0.3, an Intel-compatible update to this outstanding video capture product!
Is an article from the Street, that looks at the prospects for Gateway and how it may be taken over by the former CEO of E- Machines. They call Gateway, the number 3 computer maker in the US, with $1 billion in sales each quarter. Sounds to me like Apple is catching up. See the article at: www.thestreet.com
This web site is there for blogging by people who used to work for Apple. Although it sometimes sounds like it is by people who have no desire to return to work for Apple. Apple Genius' seem to be there in high numbers. Interesting reading.
Another site that is aimed at the former Genius is: ungeni.us
A Third site apparently by the same people is macgeekery.com .... www.afterapple.com
One of the things I like about Windows is the ability with a single click to hide all applications and show only the desktop. Here is an application that allows the Mac to do the same thing. It is donation ware and they are asking only $5 for it. I personally always put software through its paces before I pay. My last one was Snood. (Download Snood) Well worth its $19.95 price. Download Show Desktop
I am just wonder why instead of revising the Mac version of Microsoft Office, why can't Microsoft take the Windows version and translate it to run on an Intel Mac. Read the rest at my blog, UGNN.com ...
I have long been an advocate of getting books from the Gutenberg project. Now here is a project that takes those public domain publications and puts them to audio. They are even looking for readers. Currently their library lists 117 recordings in their library.
Of course Twain is there, but so are a lot of others. They are all in MP3 and/or ogg format.For longer selections bit torrent is available from LegalTorrents.com. Of course, they all play on your iPod and in iTunes.They are also available as podcasts. www.librivox.org
NothickManuals seems to be pushing the idea of portable applications. The site includes a page listing open source portable applications meant to be run on a flash or thumb drive. (Has there ever been a peripheral that has so many names?) This particular article talks about running a Mac128K or a MacPlus on a USB drive. He provides a list of link and instruction on how to accomplish this. For example using the Mini vMac emulater that runs on Mac OS (Classic or OS X), Windows, Linux and Pocket PC. It sounds like an interesting proposition. Wonder if we can get Alice to run on it.
