Gosh... Apple has been reading more and more like Windows these days -- security holes galore. Yesterday they posted four more updates - three of which are aimed at Airport security. (Read More)

Has Apple Lost Its Security Shine?

With the latest large sets of security patches and an alleged wireless driver vulnerability, Mac OS X no longer seems invincible. John C. Welch, TechWeb, asks: "What's going on here? Is the shine off Mac OS X? Is a raft of Windows-level security issues on the way for the secure-OS darling?" www.informationweek.com

Endicia for Mac

Endicia is a US Postal Service postage printing option to a program we disussed a couple of weeks ago. This one has a 30 day free trial. It requires Mac OS 10.2.8 or later and an active Internet connection. It supports, but apparently doesn't require an Endicia USB Scale DYMO Label Writer Zebra 2844.

It uses addresses MYOB and Apples address book and will import tab or comma delimited files. An amazing fact is that it will automatically add Zip+4 codes. I remember that being a big issue for us in a mass mailing software we used in one user group for awhile that had to be updated every three months. More info and download at: mac.endicia.com

Life Posters

Mike Matas has an article on his blog on how to make Life Posters from your digital photographs. He does recommend that you limit the number of photos that were made with in-door lighting, but his poster use up to 98 photos. I think they would make good Christmas gifts. He says that the printing costs about $30. See the full story...

Mira is a program that allows you to use Apple's Remote for more than Front Row and on any Mac. It works with any G3, G4, G5 or Intel Mac that has USB. SmileOnMyMac

Is a company that provides several programs for the Mac besides Browseback that we have previously discussed. "Browseback" keeps a visual record of browsing history. They also have "Disclabel," which is used for labeling CDs, "Photoprinto" for designing and printing photo albums and scrapbooks. "Textexpander" that works similarly to the old TypeIt4Me in Classic OS. " PDFpen" that allows editing of PDF files including filling out forms and adding text and images. Convert data to Excel

I have been a long time Microsoft Excel user from the days of version 1.0 on the Mac. I had found it very similar to the Mac version of MultiPlan, that I had used previously on both the Apple II and the Mac. Multiplan was probably available for more platforms that any spreadsheet ever. One of the biggest problems with using Excel is getting data from another application into it. In the mid-80s I was getting data from a mainframe program and using it to do look-ups in Excel. But first I had to use three other applications to strip out headers and footer and parse the data. Eudi will do it much quicker and in a simpler fashion. Eudi basically is a print driver that you select and it prints to a text file.

AOL now interested in privacy?

AOL is about to finally hire its first chief privacy officer. Of course it took the release of more than 600,000 AOL members Web search data to get them off their duffs. Back in August, the release of the data brought widespread criticism from privacy advocates and Congress and could lead to an FTC complaint. (news.com.com)

The big scandal however will be when people start waking up to find AOL has blocked their IP addresses for no reason. Send an email to anyone you know at AOL and see if they've already blocked YOU.

They're also disbanding their business unit that handled access subscriptions -- and watch out -- it's all aimed at generating more ad revenues. Follow along as AOL becomes the world's largest spammer ... www.siliconvalley.com
