Halloween Game from M&M
Here's a good time waster - and it's got M&Ms on it! Just in time for Halloween, a 'Dark' game with horror movie titles hidden in the picture. All you have to do is identify the movies -- simple, sure! The picture clues range from easy such as 'The Birds' and 'Pumpkin Head' to much harder and more elusive titles, all dark of course. www.darkjustgotfun.com

Skype 2

Skype has officially released version 2 of its online chat software last week. It has the voice and chat features we have become familiar with, but has also added cross-platform video chat. Another cool feature is that you can have up to 100 users and can do conference calls with four other people. Of course, the free service still doesn't come with phone numbers, but you can use it as chat software for free. Download at: www.skype.com

MsDewey.com

We were taught in school about the Dewey decimal system and how useful it is to find things. Well, MsDewey.com is a search engine that poses and makes fun of your typing. It is fun for short periods of time. It even actually finds things as well. And she isn't bad looking, if you don't count the dirty looks. (Thanks to Langalist.com for pointing it out.) Try it out at: www.msdewey.com

"How Apple Got It's Groove Back"

RoughlyDrafted.com is quickly becoming my favorite site for Apple history, or at least one person's interpretation of it. In this article, he credits Final Cut Pro, originally "Keygrip" as Apple's savior. In some ways comparing it to Adobe's rescue of the Mac in the mid 80's. (There appears to me some discussion on Digg as to whether this site is creating its comments there. But I think the stories are an interesting different look at Apple history and not necessarily the way I see things.) Read the full story at: www.roughlydrafted.com

"What Is ClamXav"

In this article from August, O'Reilly's author François Joseph de Kermadec talks about a mac users need to have an anti-virus software on its machine. ClamXav is based on an open source virus checker. It is available for download. I know that Mac users haven't been hit with any virus issues recently, but we at least can keep from passing on a virus to our Windows friends. Or even keep a virus from running on your Parallel Windows environment. ClamXav actually adds a GUI to the text based Clamav. Download ClamXav at: http://clamxav.com/ Read the story at: www.macdevcenter.com

iRecordMusic

iRecordMusic is an Internet audio recorder, it has one-click audio recording. Record audio in MP3 and MP4 formats. Of course those can be played in iTuens and on the iPod. It also supports receiving broadcasts in ReaAudio and WindowsMedia formats. This will open up additional recordings for playback on the iPod beyond podcasts. Download at: www.bitcartel.com

Catalog with iSight

With Delicious Monster Library up can catalog, browse and share books, movies, music and video games. Use any FireWire digital video camera to collect the barcodes on the back of books, movies, music or video games. Delicious Library fills in the rest of the info from the Internet. By adding the cover art and other data such as artist and author. You can even sync the catalog with a iPod and do things as make sure a purchase doesn't duplicate something already owned.
Fred notes: we use this software all the time for cataloging books for both the UGN books department and the Design Bookshelf. Couldn't live without it. ($40 fee.) Download at: delicious-monster.com

ToyViewer

ToyViewer is an image viewer, but also has some editing capabilities and allows translations to other formats. It can read and display image files in tiff, gif, bmp, png, jpg, jbig (bie), pcx, pcd, pict, pnm (ppm, pbm, or pgm), xbm, mag, SUN Rasterfile, JPEG2000 (jp2, jpc, j2k), and other formats supported by Mac OS X. ToyViewer is freeware. Available through Softpedia

Blackberry application provides a dialup network modem

Both Macintosh and Windows users can now use Bluetooth-enabled Blackberry devices to provide internet access to compatible laptops and wireless devices. This provides the first such device to the Macintosh world. This product is called "Pulse." Pulse requires a Bluetooth-enabled Blackberry with standard internet access and a Bluetooth-enabled PC or Macintosh to work. Get more information at: brainmurmurs.com

Microsoft's MacBU

Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit which is commonly called MacBoo at MS, is described in this article as being populated with Mac fanantics. But the author does come to a similar conculsion about Office for Mac dropping VBA as I have. All it will do is increase market share of the "free" alternatives. Quotes: Shaw, Kimbrough, Bob Proctor

"People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in the world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, make them."
      - George Bernard Shaw

"Remember, we all stumble, every one of us. That's why it's a comfort to go hand in hand."
      - Emily Kimbrough

"It's a strange thing, you have said it thousands of times I am sure...you will never know what you can do until you try. However the sad truth is, that most people never try anything until they know they can do it."
     - Bob Proctor
