Preview TinyURL

TinyURL now has a new feature. Instead of just taking the user to the longer URL, it first displays what that URL is. But only if the TinyURL includes the "preview." before the TinyURL.com part of the URL. You will see that below and in other TinyURLs that I use. This will insure that you won't have any surprises before moving on. Of course, you shouldn't have a worry from us, but it does seem appropriate given Fred's emphasis on safe computing on the Internet.
[Note: you will have to set preferences to view the previews.] See: TinyURL.com

FromParis.com

FromParis.com I have enjoyed seeing panoramic vistas at MacWorld Expo taken by members of a QuickTime VR group. Here is a web site that truly uses the technology in a beautiful way showing a number of locations around the city of Paris. (France, not Texas.) (Read More)

Xslimmer

Remember when we switched from 68040 machines to the PowerPC chip? At that time, we got applications, that were made to run on ether processor. Something like the Universal applications today. At that time, we had a number of programs that would strip out the unnecessary code for the "other" machine. Well, we are in a similar situation today. If you have an Intel machine, the PowerPC code takes up space on your drive and likewise for the PowerPC having needless Intel code.

Xslimmer is one of the applications that will work on the Universal Binary apps. It is free until 11/22 so it won't cost anything to try it if you work fast. It has a simple drag and drop interface. Meanwhile, the price for the final version is $6.95. Get it at: www.xslimmer.com

MacWorld Expo Events

Ilene Hoffman has sent us the following about her Hess Memorial List: "Do you feel you're missing out on all the parties and special events at Macworld Conference and Expo? Never fear for the venerable Hess Memorial Macworld Events List is always available to see what you don't have to miss. Events added daily until show week, January 8 - 12, 2007.

Hint: Don't print out the list until Jan. 8. Please thank sponsors too: Prosoft Engineering, MicroMat, Stone Design, and DriveSavers. Produced for all user group members by Mac Consultant, Ilene Hoffman, ilenesmachine@comcast.net."

Of course, if you want to get your event listed, contact Ilene. Her address is at the web site. Point your browser to: after Thanksgiving to see the events. www.ilenesmachine.com

Civilization IV Demo - Mac Version

Below is the link to get this demo. I had to download a Bittorrent client to do it. So I am now learning new technology. It is 451.64 MB. But even with Bittorrent, my download took over 5 hours. So let me know how you do. Civ II and Civ III were in turn my favorite game. Of course, as a rule, there aren't many games that I find interesting for any length of time. (Read More)

Control the computer with your thoughts?

Hitachi has successfully tested a brain-machine interface to turn power switches on and off. The device attached to the skull in a number of places and measures changes in brain blood flow and translates those into voltage signals. They hope to make it a commercial product in 2011

MacFormat Special Subscription offer for USA

MacFormat has long been my favorite British Mac magazine. It has always provided an accompanying CD and has a great selection of offers. Of course, the advertisements in pounds haven't meant much to me. However, their $16 newsstand price has kept me from buying it since getting a family life. Now they are offering a one year subscription for NEW subscribers for $98 US. This will save you the gas to get to Borders. BTW - they have a number of good e-mail newsletters as well. Subscribe at: www.imsnews.com

Google Adds Mac Support to Ajax Toolkit

Google's Ajax Toolkit is used by web application builders to compile Java code into JavaScript. JavaScrit is need to put Ajax features into the user interface and it works with XML data. It also resolves differences between MS Explorer, Safari and Firefox browsers. This really is a step up for the Mac browsers in that they are less likely to be rejected by a web site. $100 Compaq Laptop

Circuit City is suppose to have a Compaq Presario Notebook with a Celeron M420, 512MB, 60 GB hard drive and a 15.4" screen this coming Friday. Bet the quantity is very limited. However, there is a catch. If you don't sign up for a 12 month Vonage subscription, the price is $299.99. You can see the ad and others at: bfads.net

Apple orders iPhone?

Information Week is reporting that The Commercial Times newspaper in Taiwan has reported that Apple has ordered 12 million iPhones from Hon Hai Precision Industry Company. Hon Hai has been an Apple partner for several years. The article goes on to pure speculation about the looks and feature set of the phone. The article does say that the phone would be on sale in the Spring. Sounds like a Mac World Expo announcement to me. But then this column is no longer the Rumor Manager. And in my mind, this speculation is all rumor. See the full story...
