Apple CEO Steve Jobs speaks out on DRM

Last week, Steve Jobs put out a public letter calling for the end of Digital Rights Management. Many music industry leaders said that it didn't make sense and Apple should license their DRM to other players. Thus we present a brief overview of just some of the industry pros to cons...

Jupiter says European leaders agree - somewhat.

Jupiter Research meanwhile reported that music industry executives in Europe feel that while continued legal action against file sharing is necessary, they also believe that the industry is losing the war against file sharing. They think that they need to reconsider their policy and end DRM. 62% of them think that dropping DRM will actually increase sales. Read more at: news.bbc.co.uk

Ready for Daylight Savings Time?

Pat Fauquet of Bob LeVitus Consulting published an article in the Washington Apple Pi Journal about the fact that most computers in this country are not prepared for the new daylight saving time rules. This year, it will be in effect from the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November. Most computer OSs don't handle it. And won't be updated.

At my last MUG meeting, our President ranted about how expensive it will be to update his servers to handle the changes. Fortunately for us Mac users, Mac OS X 10.4.6 and later handles it fine (with a trip to Software Update.) However, Mac OS X 10.3 and earlier won't be updated as Windows 95, 98 and XP. You will need the Vista on the PC to handle it. Of course, there isn't yet a Vista version available for servers that corporations are willing to use.

BTW - look around on the web site, WAP has a lot of great articles posted. Bet they wouldn't mind a reprint with credit, but check with them first Read Pat's story

Mac OS X Themes

Apple ahs set up the OS to handle themes, but as far as I know, has never officially announced support for them. Here is a web site that offers some alternative themes for OS X: www.macthemes.net

MacFriendly.com

As the site puts it: "From iMac to iTunes, Your Mac is Built for the Internet. But not all Internet resources are Designed with Mac Users in Mind." I can't believe how many web sites I come across that say they aren't ready for Safari or that they require Internet Explorer. Of course, I don't really understand those that say that only Netscape is supported either. This site tries to find the URLs that are Mac Friendly and provide links to them. Check it out at: www.macfriendly.com

TextExpander

TextExpander appears to do for Mac OS X what TypeIt4Me did for Mac Classic OS. It completes text typed by the user. Looks really interesting. If I was still doing a lot of chats, I might consider paying its $29.95 price. Get a trial product at: www.smileonmymac.com

Sub-notebook for Apple?

AppleInsider has published a story saying that for the first time since the elimination of the Powerbook 2400, Apple will have a sub- notebook. They are predicting a release before WWDC. We shall see. Full story at: www.appleinsider.com
