Stock Spam Nose-dive

You may remember Fred's series of articles and reports last year on "Pump & Dump" stock scam spams. Last week he was feeling pretty good when the SEC announced the launch of "Operation Spamalot". Fred comments...

Best Buy Admits Secret Web Site

Last week, Best Buy Inc admitted that they have web site for sales people to access. The sales people have been using it to disprove to customers that the prices on-line are lower than in the store. The site looked just like the one that is on-line, but had higher prices. The management said that the sales people were not suppose to be using it that way. "Steve Jobs' bad bet"

Fortune magazine Is running a story with the above title. I remember when they listed him in 2001 as the best paid executive base on his stock option, he replied with a letter to the editor that the stock was "below water" so it really wasn't worth anything. He did trade that option in for some restricted stock. Therefore it was Fortune's contention that he really didn't have faith in the company. He gave up what today would be worth just over $2.5 billion. Read the full story at: money.cnn.com

5 Hidden Mac OS X Gems

This blogger has written an interesting article with the above title. I am not that sure how hidden they are, but he lists the following as hidden gems:
Save as PDF, Preview, Summarize, Smart Folders, and what he calls Snippets, but what must of know as Clippings. But what is interesting is the responses these comments have gotten. However, how many of these can you tell your user group about? I use PDF and Preview all the time and have used Summarize in the past to help build this column. Of course, Smart Folders are used in iTunes and Mail, but I don't use them much in the Finder, do you? Clippings I have used since System 8, or was it 7? I forget.

"Mac Office users were Microsoft 'Guinea pigs'"

MacWorld UK has run this story about an email the head of the Mac Business Unit sent Bill Gates in 1997. It was exposed during an anti-trust trial in Iowa. In it, the MBU chief Ben Waldman tells Gates that they can try out new technologies on the Mac users with out the risk of doing it on Windows users. For some reason, people are acting like this is a bad idea. I like trying new technology. But the part of the story I found interesting was the idea that they were literally considering "punishing" Apple by dropping Office. It didn't appear to be a serious consideration, but it was put out there.Read the full story at: www.macworld.co.uk

Make Postcards in Mail

Here is an add-in for Apple's Mail, which will enable the user to produce picture postcards to send to your friends. It is easy, just drop an image on to the window and it can be resized, have a message pane and there is even a stamp available. It is shareware for $10. Try it out at: www.hawkwings.net

Mac OS X Spreadsheet Roundup

This blogger has completed a listing of all the Mac options to Microsoft Excel. At least I can't think of any he has missed. He goes into pretty deep detail on Mariner Calc, Mesa, NewOffice, Open Office, Tables and ThinkFree Calc. Mesa is the one that is unfamiliar to me. It is rated highly by this author and I plan on checking it out. Full article at: www.musingsfrommars.org

Info-Mac

I had forgotten about using Info-Mac to get Mac files. I came across the Info-Mac Hyper Archive web site last Friday. It posted this notice, apparently back in 2005:
"Note: The hyperarchive is a mirror of the info-mac file archive. Info-mac has recently announced that they will be disbanding and retiring the archive. Hyperarchive will remain in service for as long as the info-mac archive remains available. Once info-mac turns out the lights for the last time, we may or may not do the same."
I think it was BBS's that made the biggest use of Info-Mac. Ain't many of them left either. Check out the archive at: hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu
