MacDinners originated with Randy Zeitman (Marinersoft) and Bill Achuff; they have been evolving for about a year or so. I helped John Linton, President of Main Line Mac Users Group, find a place for MDv4 in October and thought it would be fun to have our group co-host the next one. The user groups co-host the MacDinner with User Group Alliance. With the holidays, Bill decided to wait and have one in February. I am also the Hospitality Chairperson of our group, so I assumed the hostess responsibilities. I had the help of fellow MUGSNJ member, Lisa Rysinger, who made and secured our site selection and set up an Internet eddress for the RSVPs. Due to my love of New Orleans, having an event in February made a Mardi Gras theme a natural choice! It was the first MacDinner with a theme.
We had help from outside the group, too. Most of my Mardi Gras knowledge came from a longtime friend of mine (also a Mac User), in New Orleans. Friends in Alabama sent beads, doubloons and decorations. Some of the colored sugars for the six King Cakes that I baked came from friends in Washington, DC.
Traditionally, whoever gets the baby buys the next cake or has the next party. In this case, (dare I admit we made it so?) Bob Sandler of Macs@PACS got the baby. His group is co-hosting the next MacDinner.
We decorated the restaurant with balloons in the Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold. Everyone was greeted with several strands of beads to wear. Some people wore sequined hats or feathered masks. Mardi Gras music played in the background. It was a very festive atmosphere!
