Highlights from the User Group Lounge

The "Think digital, act analog" theme was suggested all three days in the User Group Lounge. In this special room, user group attendees could take a breather from the show floor and enjoy speakers from various corners of the Mac community. Sessions included Warren Williams of the Appleworks User Group, Ilene Hoffman of MacFixit, and Dave Marra, Apple Senior Systems Engineer. One of the better sessions was Amaya Gergoff leading a panel discussion on virtual user groups. Richard Crispin chaired discussions with The Consortium of Canadian User Groups.
___ Highlights of the week came with a superb chat with Dennis Sellers, Senior Editor for MacCentral, and cutting up with Shane Anderson, owner of the new Mac Evangelist list -- both top sellers, and top-ranked Mac medias.

Dr Mac Bob LeVitusA visit from the Doctor...
Aside from his life as a rock-n-roll star, writing books, training and speaking, Bob LeVitus (fondly referred to as "Dr. Macintosh") also happens to be an avid user group supporter! He has appeared at several NAUGSAW events, and was the Co-Master of Ceremonies at the 2000 User Group Academy Awards (where he boasted of personally visiting most of the user groups who were present at the affaire.)
___ With more than 37 popular computing books to his credit however, most people know Bob from his Mac titles. His Stupid Mac Tricks first wowed Mac users back in the days of the SE 30s, and since then his Mac OS X For Dummies, The Little iTunes Book and the popular Macworld Microsoft Office 2001 Bible books combined have sold more than a million copies worldwide.
___ Bob is a previous columnist for Macworld Magazine, Mac User Magazine, and is a syndicated newspaper columnist (Dr. Mac) for the Houston Chronicle, Austin American-Statesman, and others. He's a relentless publicity hound, and a respectable musician! (See "Party" photos!)
___ As he proved in in Friday afternoon User Group Lounge session, his kindly Texas manner, and his friendly willingness support user groups is not just learning but entertaining as well!

Ileene HoffmanEverybody's favorite party gurl...
Everyone turns out to see Ilene no matter where she appears! She is well known for a wide variety of mactivities, most notably the The Hess Memorial Macworld Party List, a highly coveted list around Macworld time. (See "Party")
___ Many user group people know her as the 1998 User Group Academy "User Group Hero" award winner, or as the author of the iMac Fast & Easy book, 2nd Edition. She administrates the forums on MacFixit and is Contributing Editor to MacTech and Tech Republic magazines. This was one of the great sessions in the User Group Lounge -- so entertaining in fact, she should be on TV! Visit her at: http://www.ilenesmachine.com and http://ww.macfixit.com)

Dennis SellersThe man in the 'Mac' know...
Dennis Sellers is long-time friend of user groups, and the senior editor of MacCentral, the world's largest and most trusted purveyor of news, views and all things Macintosh. His session covered everything from Apple's rumored iPad, to whether or not Job's 'broken camera' episode was for real, or a plant! Everyone enjoyed Dennis for sure!
___ His nationally syndicated column in Computer User is one of the most read columns in the computer industry. Beside his 2,500 magazine and newspaper articles his editorial talents have been applied to comics (Comic Book Heroes), photography (Digital Camera Magazine), and a host of other subjects. Read Dennis' column at: MacCentral dot com.

Kristina DeNikeKristina talks, we listen
What a thrill for any Mac user -- to spend an hour with Kristina DeNike the Director of Product Evaluation for Macworld Labs. Hey, this is where all of the product testing happens -- those evaluations that eventually influence the purchase of millions of dollars worth of Mac equipment and peripherals. Previously, from PC Magazine and Test Manager at MacUser and MacWeek lab her expertise is second to none. Many know her for her work helping to develop and beta test multiple versions of MacBench (the former Macintosh industry product testing standard.) She's a major voice in the Mac market and one we're sure even Steve listens to! Kristina talks... you should listen!

Garr ReynoldsThe boss was in...
About twenty user group officers, including this editor, turned out to participate in the brainstorm session with Apple's User Group Program Manager, Garr Reynolds -- no one was displeased.
___ Even though new to Apple corporate user group management and the user group community at large, Garr is no stranger to user groups. His considerable people skills and gentle manner ushered in a lively but thought provoking discussion ranging from the near-dead Apple User Group discussion list, to the intricacies and pitfalls of Apple Branding for user groups. Best were discussions of programs that would be beneficial to user group, and the opportunity to hear suggestions and comments from other UG leaders from around the world. Everyone was pleased with the session -- and was anxious to meet this new face in the Apple scheme of user groups.
___ Garr left us all with the conviction to "Think digital, act analog" in spreading the User Group way.

Now, let's visit the Macworld User Group Booth ...
