Editor's Notes

Fred Showker,
Editor/Publisher, User Group Network News

Not all news this month was happy news. The saddest news in a long time came last week that our good friend and user group colleague Jim Alley has passed.

July, Macworld, News, Shareware... - My momma once told me: "if you want to go places in this world, keep people talking about you!"
__ While I don't know if that's really true, it sure seems to be the philosophy Microsoft adheres to! They've monopolized the news media and half the listservs on the net for the past several weeks.
__ First their "Smart Tags" hit the public -- an insidious plan to mislead web surfers into thinking they'd get content when they'd really be getting more of Microsoft's paid advertising screen spam! That one was quickly squashed by consumer revolt. But as our good friend Doug Clifford says: "They'll be back, and you can bet they'll bring "Smart Tags" back too." So we'll just have to wait and see.
__ Then the news hit with the upper court's rulings on Microsoft's monopolistic business. Some say they won, some say they lost, but again Microsoft says, "I'll be back."
__July is Macworld Expo NY month of course, and we'll be there to meet and greet with Mac users from around the world. I'm going just to observe, and to catch up with all those I haven't seen since San Fran, or last year's NY.
__ Sandy's got some great shareware this month, and as usual, be sure to peek in on Lynn Wegley in the Info Manager column.
__ Hope to see you all in New York at Macworld.
__ If you do happen to be a user group officer or member, and happen to be reading this, and you do happen to run into me at Macworld, say "Fred: I read in the UGNN Newsletter that I'm supposed to come up to you and say WHERE IS IT" ... and I'll have a special treat for you!

[Note: read my sidebar "We'll miss you AUGD"]

Blowout Coverage: Microsoft Breakup Overturned - A federal appeals court vacated the Microsoft break-up on Thursday and sent the landmark antitrust case back to a lower court to come up with a new set of remedies. - Thanks to: for sending this in. .
Microsoft Won't Be Split - The ruling reflected the prevailing sentiment that the lower court ruling and break-up would not hold up under further scrutiny based on the tenor of the judges' questions of government and company attorneys during oral arguments in February. The fact that the judges ruled unanimously was notable, according to trial watchers. - Thanks to: Mary Mosquera, InternetWeek News for sending this in. .
Microsoft Hopes To Settle - Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has said he hopes to settle the antitrust lawsuit pending against the company. - Thanks to: Mitch Wagner for sending this in. File this one under: Editorial For more info go to: http://update.internetweek.com/cgi-bin4/flo?y=eD280BdxAn0V30PUG0AF
.
Decision Reaction Mixed - Reaction to the lengthy appellate decision in the Microsoft antitrust case was as mixed as the ruling itself on Thursday. - Thanks to: Mary Mosquera for sending this in. File this one under: Editorial For more info go to: http://update.internetweek.com/cgi-bin4/flo?y=eD280BdxAn0V30PUH0AG
.
Microsoft "Smart Tags" Bomb Came and Went - Bowing to pressure, Microsoft has decided to remove Smart Tags from upcoming versions of Internet Explorer and Windows XP.
__Smart Tags automatically add "links" to Web content that send a reader to related content. For instance, with Smart Tags a page that contained the word "browser" might offer a link to a tech dictionary defining the word. Or it might link to Microsoft's download page.
__Smart Tags were included in a beta version of Internet Explorer released earlier this week, but will be dropped in the final Windows XP release, slated for later this year. - Thanks to: Richard Karpinski for sending this in. .
MacHack a Success... and you can share it... - One of our favorite events of the year is the famous MacHack event... now their latest CD-ROM is available with all those great hacks.
__82 new hacks were featured at the 2001 conference -- all of which conceived, designed and written over the 72-hour conference. You can pick up the MacHack 2002 CD right now for just $19.95 plus shipping.
__Remember that many of the most famous original Mac OS software first appeared at the MacHack conference. Here's where you'll see some of the best developers in the Mac OS field! - Thanks to: UGNN News Staff for sending this in. File this one under: OS: Enhancements (Macintosh) For more info go to: http://www.machack.com/
.
The "Ultimate" 3D Rendering Program? - Just the other day I was chatting with a friend from Texas, and the topic of Corel came up.
__"Wonder what ever happened to Corel?"
__With the muscle and strong-arm marketing tactics of Adobe it's not difficult to answer that question. However, Corel is alive and healthy; still taking care of millions of happy users. Last week they introduced the all new Bryce 5, the "other" 3D rendering and animation software.
__To many, Bryce is the ultimate 3D software! The new version 5 features new options and greater rendering speeds -- and now it runs flawlessly on all the Mac OS (including X) as well as those "other" computers. Bryce 5 is the first Mac OS X release by Corel.
__For powerful 3D landscape and animation, photo-realistic landscapes and models and superbly creative environments, Bryce is the one. Best of all, you don't even need an extensive 3D modeling background.
__Pick up Bryce 5 for $309, or upgrade for $159 - Thanks to: UGNN News Staff for sending this in. File this one under: Graphics, Web, DTP: Publishing, printing, output For more info go to: http://www.corel.com/
