UG Presidents Sing the Unsung Heros
__ User Group Presidents Awards "...sing the unsung
heros" in a rather unique program. User Group Presidents are invited to identify
and recognizes a single individual in their local user group who has excelled above
and beyond the call of duty in the service of their user group.
__ This honor will be given to ALL Nominees, with an
award to be presented locally at the group's meeting. Winners will also be announced
to the local news media, and publicly recognized in the User Group Academy website.
__ ONE global Nominee will then be selected by the Academy
to receive a GRAND award, which will be presented at the UG ACADEMY AWARDS EVENT
in January.

REMEMBER: There are NO deadlines for this award program. You may nominate a member
of your group any time during the year to coordinate with your group's meeting schedule.
User Group Hall of Fame to be Established
__ Officers of the User Group Academy passed a motion
last Tuesday to establish a User Group Hall of Fame to "Recognize those who
have made a difference in the user group community."
__ The User Group Hall of Fame committee will have the
unique opportunity to open the submission process for nominations from the general
user group community.
__ The User Group Hall of Fame will replace the "HERO"
award from years past, which recognized those special individuals in the world who
have made outstanding contributions or advancements to the community of computer
clubs and computer user groups.
__ While details are not available at this time, the
board has indicated that a panel will be assembled from the general user group population
to perform the duties of receiving recommendations and nominations, and to establish
a polling facility by which final candidates can be approved for induction.
__ To become involved in the process, find additional
info at the User Group Academy Web site.

Association of Apple Computer User Groups in
NY
__ Officers and planners for the Association of Apple
Computer User Groups (AACUG) will meet in closed session next week to discuss the
current charter and entertain motions to amend the missions of the charter.
__ One of the amendments to be discussed is an advocacy
task force to represent the interests of user groups and computer users at large
in Legislation and Regulation in Washington D.C.
__ This move by AACUG has been prompted by contact from
individuals both in member user groups and from the user group community at large
who have recognized a real need for consumer advocacy in Washington.
Some of the items cited for representation are:
__ * Online
Privacy Issues
__ * Unsolicited
Email (Spam)
__ * ISP
Price Fixing in favor of selective operating systems
__ While this is a closed session, information should
be forthcoming shortly after July 20, 2001. Watch the UGN News page or the AACUG.org

NOTES from the EDITOR
It's wonderful to learn that there are individuals in the User Group Community who
recognize a genuine need for computer users advocacy in Washington D.C.
__ I, myself, am a diligent opponent to unsolicited
email (spam), and you can bet I'll be the first to sign up for any user group related
task force that aims to make our voice heard in Washington D.C.
__ I recently met with our district's Congressman, Robert
(Bob) Goodlatte to present a carefully prepared dossier on spam activities from a
user's point of view. Goodlatte is the key proponent in the most prominent Bill on
Personal Online Privacy currently in Congress. I got a first hand look at the positions
being taken by Congressman Goodlatte's privacy task force and was able to introduce
some updated data that will prove important in the ongoing case.
__ The topics proposed in this week's news from AACUG
don't just affect you and I. They affect the very bedrock of the technology community.
User Groups -- if allowed to present a unified voice in Washington -- can represent
hundreds of thousands of computer users across America, who want change... and who
want their personal freedoms and privacy protection. That voice can be gathered into
a strong message -- one that Washington will be unable to ignore.
__ So, I urge you. When the call comes to join in these
important programs, don't hide your head in the sand. Don't take the easy way out.
Say YES. Take a stand to a difference.
That's it for today.
We look forward to the opportunity to meet you at Macworld Expo in New York on the
17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th. See'ya there. Have a great summer!
