E-Books OK 'd as Art in the U.K.
- As a good mix-in with our topics on ePublishing and eBooks - a grant by the U.K.'s funding body for university research confers automatic legitimacy. - from Wired News under Culture Art and ePublishing
Details at:
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,48804,00.html?tw=wn20011204

The Great MS Patch Nobody Uses
- Of course you'd expect them to fix it, right? Yet why fix it when it's a huge source of revenue for friendly spammers? The flurry of virulent e-mail worms that attack Outlook users can be prevented by a free patch on Microsoft's website. The problem: It's impossible to find and cumbersome to install. So, what else is new? - Thanks to Michelle Delio, from Wired News for tipping us on this one. File it under: worthless Technology from Microsoft
Read more about this at:
http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,48756,00.html?tw=wn20011203
.
Lots of Spam over the holidays
- We experienced plenty of spam for the holidays. While business is slower than usual at the post office, e-mail messages from marketers are on the rise. But whether it's due to anthrax fears or economic concerns is open to debate. - Thanks to Joanna Glasner for sending this one in. File it under The Online Society: Stupid Spammers
Joanna's story is published at:
http://www.wired.com/news/holidays/0,1882,48481,00.html?tw=wn20011210
.
Speaking of Big Brother: MS TV
- MS TV: Will Be Watching You ... Microsoft's partnership with Predictive Networks in its television venture will allow advertisers to monitor what viewers are watching. But honest, they won't know your name, they claim. - Another great piece of investigative journalism from Michelle Delio and Wired News. It's all about Privacy, Security Matters
and you can read it at:

.
Wham, Bam, Thank You Spam
- One way to actually make money off spam is to sue the people sending it. That's what Bennett Haselton did under Washington State's anti-spam law, and now he has $2,000 coming his way. Others are doing the same to junk faxers. - This is from an article by Jeffrey Benner published in Wired news under the topic of Business
The full story is at:
http://www.wired.com/news/ebiz/0,1272,49089,00.html?tw=wn20011213
.
Speaking of fixing spammers...
- EU Sticking to Tough Spam Law? Only the European Parliament stands in the way of a continental ban on unsolicited spam, as EU ministers push forward an important digital data law. - One to watch in Wired News File this one under Personal Privacy, and spam
the full story is at:
http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,48894,00.html?tw=wn20011207

Woz's Dangerous Handheld Liaison
- A Blackberry competitor goes nuts and picks Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak to join the board of directors for a new handheld maker, Danger Inc. SEE A PICTURE - From Wired News under Business and technology
at:
http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,48869,00.html?tw=wn20011206

Google's Gaggle of Discussions
- The popular search engine has posted 20 years' worth of Usenet discussion group postings: more than 700 million entries in all. Included: American Taliban John Walker, screen name, 'doodoo.' - by Michelle Delio and Wired News, Culture
at:
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,49016,00.html?tw=wn20011212

Sites Forlorn When Reborn as Porn
- We've reported on this before, because it happened to one of our domains when a clerical mistake caused the domain name to lapse back into availability. Within a day, before we could pay the fee to keep it secure, a German porno site (backed by a Hollywood CA firm) scalped it and had it up and running.
... Now, this story from Wired -- Small town governments, church groups and the Ohio State Senate have Web addresses that have been hijacked and held ransom by pornographers lately in a growing trend. - Good info from Jeffrey Benner from Wired News. Business
The full story is at:
http://www.wired.com/news/ebiz/0,1272,48903,00.html?tw=wn20011210

Israeli Kids 'Fess Up to 'Goner'
- Four teenagers admit they wrote and spread the Goner e-mail worm that created apoplexy among antivirus companies last week. - From Wired News under Online security, virus, worms

Fresh new start for creative writers...
- Stone Table Software has a unique product called Z-Write -- not quite a word processor, but it is... not quite an organizational tool, but it is -- one thing's for sure, it's a great tool for creative writers.
... Z-Write is the world's first "non-linear" word processor: it is uniquely designed to help writers organize large writing projects. Instead of the nightmare of managing hundreds of separate word processing files of notes, ideas, chapters, revisions, character bios, bibliography information, quotations, website locations, etc., Z-Write allows the writer to store unlimited documents in a single file! Users are free to organize information any way they want. Z-Write eschews the bloat of many of today's word processors, offering simplicity and elegance. Streamlined for writing, it stays out of your way so you can actually get work done.
... While z-Write has been in the Mac OS, a Windows version scheduled for 2002. - Thanks to Stone Table Software for tipping us to this great Word and Text Processing software
Fully functional trial versions of Z-Write may be downloaded :

Did you delete it, then want it back?
- TypeRecorder 1.2 for Macintosh or Windows automatically records and saves all keystrokes, effectively preventing data loss while also monitoring unauthorized activity.
... TypeRecorder discreetly monitors and saves every keystroke to a daily file, regardless of what application is being used. In the event of a power outage or a system crash, all work can be retrieved from TypeRecorder's records, regardless of whether the work had been saved. Version 1.2 of TypeRecorder can automatically hide these records to hinder unauthorized access and provide more privacy. It also features numerous internal improvements. TypeRecorder can be purchased at a cost of $15 US. - Thanks to Michael Hunson a great idea for writers, data recording and Word and Text Processing
A free trial version is available from:

QuickPopup - The Easiest Communication Software
- Kanex Group has a great new idea on how to communicate in the office, more easily, faster, better. QuickPopup allows users to exchange popup messages over corporate, school and home networks without connecting to the Internet.
... Built for Mac OS X, classic Mac OS and Windows, QuickPopup's versatility will be particularly welcomed by educational and other institutions with a variety of computers on their networks.

QuickPopup works on small, medium or large networks, on PCs and Macs. No complicated installation, setup or special training is required. It can be deployed in minutes; its intuitive and simple interface makes it easy to use, even by beginners. Pricing starts at $15 per copy. - A good idea for Email Conference Voice Fax

Designer Resource: About Color Blindness
