Aladdin Support on Self Extracting Files
__ After a long process of attempting to discover why so many UGN and AACUG members were having problems accessing the Knowledge Base files we finally made it to the Aladdin support person who actually knew what the problem is.

A round of applause for Peter Tempel, Support Lead for StuffIt Deluxe
Peter sez:
[Quote] As for your .sea issue. First and foremost NEVER post a .sea to a web site without .hqx or .bin encoding it first. It will be destroyed by any non-Mac machine or pipeline it encounters on its way
down.
__ Further, when files show up in the window of your browser like that,
it most ofen means that the "MIME type" for that kind of file is not configured properly on the Web server that is serving your page to the rest of the world. You'll need to check with your web gurus to make sure the server side of the software is configured correctly for all the different types of files you intend to make available for download.
__ But in any case, posting an .sea is not a good idea. Post a .sit, .bin or .hqx. The downloader will need StuffIt Expander, there's no way around that.

Peter continues. . .
All submissions to Tech Support are now handled at
http://www.aladdinsys.com/faqs/index.html
When you go to the page you need to choose your category
from the following list:
* General Questions
* Macintosh Consumer Products
* Windows Consumer Products
* PalmOS Products
* Macintosh Developer Products
* Linux Products (public beta)
From the next page you need to choose the PRODUCT you are inquiring
about. Once you are on the PRODUCT page, we ASK you to choose the
KIND OF PROBLEM you are having, HOWEVER if you are pretty sure that your problem is unique, you can skip that step, scroll to the bottom
of the PRODUCT page, and click the link that says:
. . . NONE OF THESE FAQ's ANSWER MY QUESTION
. . . If you did not find the answer you need
. . . in our Knowledge Base, please proceed to our
. . . Technical Support Request Form.

Clicking there will take you to the form which will be submitted
immediately and responded to via email, usually within 48 hours on
weekdays. [end quote]

We found this to be the way to use Aladdin's online support facility. It's a bit confusing once you arrive there, but following Peter's instructions above, sends you on your way quickly. Bravo, Aladdin.
