The Good Guys Die Young
We received the unhappy news last week that Jim Alley, the Editor of the
Award winning Mac Monitor, passed away unexpectedly.
__
Jim was such a huge asset to SMUG in Savannah, Georgia. His style and wit will be missed and we wish SMUG and his
wife Majie our heart felt condolences.
Cards can be sent to Majie at their address: __
320 East 54th Street __
Savannah, GA 31405
Special thanks to Michael Henigan, Atlanta Macintosh Users Group, and Rick
Curran of the Coastal Mac User Group for sending me the announcement.
__
Aside from being a long-time personal friend and colleague,
Jim Alley was a steadfast user group supporter, officer and
newsletter editor who applied his considerable skills to the
benefit of the Savannah Mac User Group (SMUG). __
His contributions to the UG community were many, dating back
to the very dawning of the Mac revolution. Jim was an active,
and prolific poster to the original User Group Forum on America
Online as well as producing the excellent UG Newsletter the
Mac Monitor for the Savannah group -- a three-time User Group
Academy Award winner. __
Jim was the head of the design department at Savannah College
of Arts & Design and was also an active writer and contributor
to the design education community. His words and works have
benefited many through the pages of Print Magazine, CA Magazine
and others. Through his computer illustration and design classes
he helped literally thousands of young talents discover their
abilities and continue on into productive lives in the visual
communications fields. __
Jim was, at one time, a frequent uploader of digital art to the
AOL User Group Forum and the AOL Desktop Publishing forums.
His disk of graphics and illustrations has been one of the popular
PD disks in the SMUG (Virginia) PD library. __
As I today, look back over hundreds of email exchanges I've had
with Jim over the years, I remember a courteous and deeply
thoughtful individual -- one who seemed to always know what to
say, and how to say it -- one who was always willing and able to
help and contribute to the well-being of the others. __
Some time ago one of those emails from Jim admitted that he had
been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer -- it was the first, and
LAST mention - EVER - of problems of his own. __
I know Jim will be sadly missed by many, many people: from his
fellow instructors, and administrators at Savannah CA&D, to the
many user group members and officers across the country who
awaited each issue of the Monitor with great anticipation. __
Yes, we'll all miss him. He was one of the "good guys."
Our heart-felt wishes go out to Majie, and family.
