Bridge ATA solution for G5s

from Sonnet

You've heard us talk about Sonnet's great products before, well this one just came out and offers real hope for those held hostage in the OS 9 days.

Tempo Bridge

TEMPOSonnet's Tempo Bridge, allows users to install a 3.5-inch parallel ATA hard drive inside a Power Mac G5, the first Apple computer featuring the Serial ATA (SATA) drive interface. "Serial ATA, the emerging high-performance drive interface technology, offers greater performance than parallel ATA and uses smaller cables and connectors for better cooling. However, SATA is incompatible with ordinary parallel ATA drives. The Tempo Bridge creates an upgrade path for using a spare drive, or moving one from an older computer to a new G5.

According to Robert Farnsworth, Sonnet's President and CEO:
"The Tempo Bridge is a unique solution -- it works with the G5's short Serial ATA data and power cables, and allows the user to secure the hard drive in the drive bay using the computer's built-in latch. It is an elegant solution for an exceptional computer. Sonnet engineered the Tempo Bridge specifically for use in the Power Mac G5, but it works in any computer with a Serial ATA connection."

Unless I miss my guess, this product will work as well as other Sonnet products. I've used their cards for over six years now, and have both Tango and Combo cards in four Macs. They have worked flawlessly since day one. See my review and installation story on the Sonnet Tango Card.

Pricing and Availability

The Tempo Bridge will begin shipping October 25, 2004, with an MSRP of $49.95.
