Super easy panoramas...
Since I travel with all my digital photos on my PowerBook, the first trick I had
to try from Terry's demonstration was the panorama Photomerge. I dug out the series
of shots I took at the Berkeley marina park in June and decided to give it a whirl.
I had previously played with the panorama in Photoshop, but had given up after the
process achieved 34 megs and started stalling the Powerbook. (Hey, it's just a little
300 mHz G3 with 256 megs!) Besides, I had neglected to use a tripod. I also forgot
to lock the exposure which caused the color balance and exposure to shift as the
camera panned into the direct sun and then out again. Bad stuff. But with Element's
Photomerge I generated a nice panorama in just a few clicks.
Here are some results in progress. As you can see the images are shifting and
uneven. I did a pretty good job without a tripod, but still not quite good enough.
I went into Photomerge under the File menu, gathered the files to use, added the
source files, set size, and hit Automatically Arrange Source Images. (There are some
memory and processor issues, so be sure to see the technical
notes.)
___ The next dialog
let me select options like correct perspective. (Click to see the dialog window.
It will open as a separate browser window.)
At that point the Photomerge new composition dialog pops up. Here I could move, tweak,
and manipulate the perspective further. (Perspective is really cool allowing you
to literally set the vanishing points and match the camera obscura or render to cylindrical
mapping. Another article all together!)
___ After I was
fairly satisfied previewing the image I merely saved the file and it was done. The
whole process was finished in about the time it took you to read and follow the steps.
The advanced blending color corrected all but the most subtle shifts. They can be
fixed later with a little more time. The resulting file is around 7 megs, and over
5,000 pixels wide (72 inches plus) and was ready for QuickTime VR, or printing to
oversized banner printer. (Note the image here was over 11 inches wide and had to
be reduced to fit.)
