UGN Spam Trackers follow stock scams purveyed in spam
Following the 60-Second Window article we began tracking spam that promotes stocks. Here is the report for the week ending on March 5th, 2006
This week saw a substantial increase in stock scam traffic. We were hit with over 30 scams per day -- more than one per hour! These are the ones we could read -- many others were encoded in various other text encodings which did not display on our computers. But, let's face it -- one per hour, around the clock is a bit excessive. In fact, stock scams now outnumber all other "get rich" spam including Phishing. This week, stock scams even outnumbered porno and sex related spam as well.
At the very bottom of this web page we've posted a tab-delimited listing of the Sender and Subject line of those spams which are 'human readable'
Our top stock scam spammer last week was US MedSystems (U.S. Med), UMSY with 71 spams or roughly 10 spams per day.
Spammer Feedback: This week we got yet another letter from one of the spammers mentioned in last week's report. This one threatened law suits from "excellent legal team" yet didn't mention the specific spamvertised stock nor the company.
Spammers: if you're going to complain about our reports, be sure to include the specific stock you are defending so we can look up your spam in our database. You have no basis of claims unless you include your pertinent information.

One of the more interesting items this week is the first instance of stock scams purveyed via MSN.com -- titled: "!INSIDER STOK INFORMATION!" We've always suspected MSN as "spam friendly" since Microsoft's rejection of the Anti-Spam Initiative back in 2000 and 2001. This instance tends to reinforce those suspicions. The spam and spamvertised web site were reported, but as of today, no action taken by MSN. The spammer used Windows Microsoft Office Outlook, build 11.0.5510 and Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1106 to actually send the spam. (Originating at Insight Communications Company 12.223.71.93) We know this is criminal activity because at least three of the Can Spam provisions have been violated making this a Felony. Not only was the sending address spoofed, but the spammer used an email harvester to gather the addresses it was spamming -- a UGN email address stealth-published on the web specifically to trap email address harvesters. The domain: http://spaces.msn.com/minter1mq9/ -- very high spam rating). We'll check this source again in another week to see if MSN takes any action.
Another interesting item is the web site www.GRUTANOM.INFO created on Feb 26, 2006 by EstDomains, Inc., for a company called FTYU in Riga, 75467 LV (probably bogus). The domain is no longer available on the web -- attesting to the fact that many of these spammers set up sites just for the spam campaign and then either take them down after the campaign ends; or get taken down by the ISP. This was set up in order to advertise stocks for Biogenerics Ltd. (BIGN.PK) -- an investment venture capital company based Carson City, NV that engages in the exploitation and distribution of oil and gas reserves in the United States. While that's certainly an honorable pursuit, we cannot understand why their stock would be pumped by off-shore entities, using illegal methods, masquerading as legitimate stock advisors. (16 hits by SpamAssassin including forged headers!)
Other SpamAssassin high-rankers were several advertising Dark Dynamite Inc. (DKDY) and included two domain links we could track: www.ybusy.com (@littletrader.com, Buchanan Street, San Francisco, CA). The second spamvertised domain, www.marketbrowser.com, is owned by Leading Market Technologies in Cambridge, MA 02139, which we suspect was merely used by the spammer as an innocent 3rd party endorsement. The email came from www.evolva.ro, (86.105.154.6) registered to a George Serban in Bucuresti -- probably bogus whois listing -- came in a stealth wrapper using graphics instead of text. (6 on the SpamAssassin scale)
These are but a small representation because most stock scams include no domains, but only references to the symbol.
If you are active in the market, be careful and don't believe what you get in your email box. If someone is pumping stocks, chances are they're doing so for their own, personal gain -- not yours. Always rely on known, secure sources for your information -- or rely on a reliable brokerage firm.

We are reporting on spam activities only -- not asserting that the company listed is in fact involved in the act of spamming. Readers are cautioned to make their own decisions about purchasing spamvertised stocks. We use a three-step process to research and validate all spam received: 1 Spamcop: all spam listed has been pre-authenticated by SpamCop filtered email addresses. We do not include spam received at other email addresses. SpamCop filters are based on spam reports filed by the SpamCop population. 2 SpamAssassin Ranking: a SpamAssassin rank is assigned to each spam listed. The spam must achieve a "3" rank to be included. 3 Anti-Spam Definition: email which matches one or more criteria established in the Anti-spam Initiative Spam Definition.
