Mac shareware essentials

Holidays Shareware:
Sandy Foderick
With thanks to Rick Curran of Coastal Mac!

Useful shareware programs for fun!

Fall Fonts Festival
The annual "Fall Fonts Festival" is going on at the Design & Publishing Center (managed by UGNN's own Fred Showker!), featuring neat type faces, fonts, tips and essays on using fonts and typography. There are dozens of fonts spotlighted, (complete with samples,) that you can download. They're all located in the Publishers' Warehouse -- which Fred has maintained online since 1989 -- usually a hidden URL for subscribers to DT&G magazine only. But he gave me permission to release the URL for user groups this month. - Thanks to: Fred for sending this in. File this one under: DTP: Font related, publishing, graphics, clip art, shareware Here's where you can get it: http://www.graphic-design.com/festival/index.html

Coaster 1.1.3
Christian Roth of VisualClick software offers one of the most useful ways for audio recording direct from disk in file formats suitable for playing in your car or Walkman. Full-featured, easy to use, and best of all it is freeware. - File this one under: Home and School: Music ...Here's where you can get it: http://www.visualclick.de/download/Coaster.sit
.
Thermograph 1.3.3
Thermograph is an odd bit of shareware from Jeremy Kezer that offers information about the internal temperature of your late-model Mac. Want to know if your Mac is running too warm or need to know what range of temperatures each processor experiences? If so, this application will do it quickly and cheaply ($7 shareware). An FTP site is: ftp://ftp.versiontracker.com/DIMMCheck.sit - File this one under: OS System: Hardware ...Here's where you can get it: http://www.kezer.net/binaries/thermograph133.sit
.
MPIII Strip
MP3s are pretty much everywhere these days and most Mac users have a player or two. The joy of MPIII Strip is ease of use right from your always-present control strip. MP3 Strip will sort and play files by author, album, or folder name, and can play selected tracks or loop, although it will not play tracks off standard CDs. The shareware fee is $15 - File this one under: Home and School: MP3 Music ...Here's where you can get it: http://www.softwarium.com/
.
Stupid AppleScript Games
The only thing stupid about these games, by Kynan Shook and Matt Garrison is the name. Crazy 8s, Hangman, 8 Ball, Tic-Tac-Toe, War... if you played it as a kid, it is probably in this well written package. Versions are available for System 9 and earlier, and for OSX and both are freeware.
* The live link is for OS 9 and earlier, but they do have an OS X version at: http://homepage.mac.com/kshook/scriptsx.hqx - File this one under: Games: Puzzles, Strategy ...Here's where you can get it: http://homepage.mac.com/kshook/scripts.hqx
.
PhotoSite TimeSavior
Have you ever wanted to take a folder of web-ready pictures or images and post them to the net as a single page? PhotoSite TimeSavior will put them on a page with thumbnails and formatting intact. (An example page can be found at http://hem.netlink.se/~sft2504/sites/kalleboo/images/shots/psts/index.html) This easy to use and clever application is another bit of freeware from KalleBoo Software. http://hem.netlink.se/%7Esft2504/pstsbeta.sit http://versiontracker.com/redir.fcgi/kind=1&db=mac&id=11052/pstsPPC.sit - File this one under: Web Design and development ...Here's where you can get it: http://versiontracker.com/redir.fcgi/kind=1&db=mac&id=11052/pstsPPC.sit
.
Notes HTML Turbo
WYSIWYG web creations are great; they let even the newest user create pages that look professionally done. Problem is, they often add unnecessary lines of script, bloating the finished pages without adding content or value. HTML Turbo strips out the bloat, leaving your finished product untouched but making the underlying code smaller and quicker to load. Shareware fees are $10. - File this one under: Web Design and Development ...Here's where you can get it: http://www.regsoft.net/purchase_nonsecure.php3?productid=40680

Have a great October!
